Well, in case you're interested - the periosteum is highly sensitive to pain. That's why you felt it when the nails were hammered into your bones.

I thought the lack of nerves at that point would prevent the feeling of pain.

The periosteum is highly innervated. Mate still had a spine and eyes, so likely he had a brain too, where the signals from the nerves could be interpreted.
