He's going to jail because rich families were paying bribes to him, instead of the more traditional forms of bribery like buying a plaque with your name on it for a new building or bench on campus. This doesn't help regular people get into schools, it just makes it more expensive for rich people to buy their way in.
He helped rich people fuck over even richer people, and the institutions can't have that
goodbetterbestbested t1_j2zgwnm wrote
That's a bingo. Why did Elizabeth Holmes and Sam Bankman-Fried get in so much trouble? Same reason, they scammed dumbass rich people and exposed how dumb they are (though such exposure was not their goal)

Literally this. The side door has always been there. It’s not even an open secret it’s basically advertised. He just cut out the institutions and that was where he drew fire.

Yeah, but.... Contribute enough to the college, and they'll admit your kid. Always a couple of spots open every year for big donors.
GymAndGarden t1_j30yr53 wrote
No. I personally know some of the families who were involved (not close friends, just acquaintances in the beach town I live in, so we’d be at the same parties).
The reason this guy developed a side door was that for even very wealthy people, donating does not (in today’s times) guarantee a spot. People have donated millions, only to see the university pull an ethical move and deny their kid a spot.
Thats why this guy’s side door through sports spots was so enticing and very effective. The rich kids who bought buildings were too high profile and direct to be all let in, every time.
But the sport spots were guaranteed.
The FBI even mentions this misconception in their PDF’s for the case, these are public and posted online at the Justice Department.
You’ll have fun reading the investigation!

Good? This is a travesty of justice. He might do one year in jail before they let him out.
He gives back 10 million......from the 50+ million he probably stole. And all those students who never got in because their spots were stolen will never be made whole.
He looks old but he's only 62 years old. In a short while he will be out enjoying his fortune.

Imagine thinking that going to one of these exclusive schools actually gives you a better education than a cheap accredited school. Imagine how you went to those schools for "the connections" so that you yourself could be advantaged over other people. Imagine using those connections to take advantage and sneak your kids into an "elite" college. Gotta maintain the cycle protect the rich from the rich.

What a perfect metaphor and explanation for the American socio-economic system in a nutshell:
- the have-not’s
- the have’s
- the have-a lot’s
- those ones who play the three against each other for profit
How do these students socialize with each other once on campus? Are there tribes based on these dynamics? Do they infect every aspect of academic and residential life?

Acting like what he did is similar to donor or legacy admissions is ridiculous. Not defending admissions for kids with rich parents, but it is at least openly corrupt. This dude was literally just lying and faking kids applications.

honestly he should've gotten a lot longer considering he's the tip of the iceberg. These college "consultants" have long used their connections to get kids of clients admitted via all kinds of dubious methods. What needs to happen is there should be some kind of oversight admission committee to vet all potential athletic recruits, instead of giving coaches carte blanche authority.

GuntherSpiermen t1_j3227qt wrote
Spicy opinion: there should be no "admissions". If people want to learn, let them fucking learn. It sucks because if someone fucked up in high school, they're basically ruined for life.
I know people will shout "but community colleges!!" etc. Those often don't have as many career majors and are lacking in resources. Plus no dorms so if you don't live near one and don't have decent internet, you're screwed (if they even have distance learning, many still don't).
CatProgrammer t1_j358sr8 wrote
I agree in principle, but not all non-community colleges have the resources to accept all applicants either. I know some that actually had to defer some incoming students because of not physically having enough space to house them.
> It sucks because if someone fucked up in high school, they're basically ruined for life.
You don't have to go to college right away after high school either, and it's not like you can't reapply/apply to others once you've improved your skills from high school. And then there are vocational schools, trade schools, etc.
GuntherSpiermen t1_j35tgre wrote
Have you ever tried going back after a decade or more from graduating high school? It's not easy and you get a serious side-eye for it, plus feel out of touch with the rest of the student body still in their high school party phase. But age is beside the point, the system here sucks, and people should be allowed to learn.
CatProgrammer t1_j35tscd wrote

I've tutored freshmen and juniors and had joint grad/undergrad classes, if you're there to learn and not being a party animal nobody's going to care. Hell I've had old people in classes before, nobody cared.
