According to the last couple of articles I've read about this, about 80% of banned items are missed at TSA checkpoints. That means if both the TSA's self reported successful confiscations (4,432 in 2019( and 80% being missed are accurate, then 17,728 guns were missed in 2019. That's security theater not actual security.

Those tests are “red team” exercises, they are designed to exploit weaknesses in detection such as using X-ray proof bags and 3D printed firearms. The whole point of these exercises is to show they can happen so security posture can improve.
If the red team got caught (the 20%) it’s worth noting because those were “noisy” after the more quiet tests were completed. The red team conduct these to get caught to have a baseline on where the posture is at.

Honestly, if I was the TSA guy and saw that on the screen, I’d double glove to see what that was.

In reality, if you were the TSA guy, you wouldn’t have seen it, and only saw something if it was a water bottle

How is that a firearm?
MississippiJoel t1_j0qp1xl wrote
Looks like it fires a bullet out the left side if the operator slams it onto the target. So first you get the effect of a sledgehammer blow with an immediate gunshot wound.
VentusHermetis t1_j0r6r58 wrote
What makes you think that?
MississippiJoel t1_j0r8c4d wrote
The bullet sized hole on the left side, and the appearance of one side being able to slide into the other.
VentusHermetis t1_j0rfoof wrote
I think it's more likely the TSA wants to look useful and are full of shit about it being a firearm.

Could be a ‘sovereign citizen’ who is fully within his rights to carry melee weapons and homemade firearms on flights.

I wonder how many firearms our other weapons get through TSA for every one they find. Had a LEO buddy once admit he screwed up and threw a handgun in his carry-on stuff, and he didn't realize it till he got to his destination. Had to mail it back home. I've suspected since then more firearms accidentally go on planes than the TSA will ever admit.
