If only there was some way to know that this happens every single year!

Christmas? Yup. You may not know, but for thousands of years, people tend to gather in family groups for the holiday, often crowding around a conifer decked in holly, tinsel, ribbons, ornaments and the like -- and most of the time, there are gifts underneath that tree!
Lots of people have families that are geographically diverse. They tend to plan ahead for gatherings, and frequently have to purchase airline tickets to get to their destination.
I'd love to hear how this arctic blast of cold air, making records as far south as Florida, "happens every year."

Storms/canceling flights.
Every. Single. Year.
And everyone with their shocked faces is ridiculous.
Huge storm? Absolutely. But a surprise? Come on.

A surprise? It shouldn't be; it's the state of modern air travel. Should people not travel by air?

That would be great. If people would stop traveling by airplane.

I just don't see it happening, not until it's illegal.

A bomb cyclone like this does not always happen on Christmas. What are you on about?

Everyone knew this already. What is it exactly you expected them to do about it?

Not travel, or at least not be so goddamn surprised about their canceled flight. Come on.
