Newark has some of the best spanish/Portuguese food in the area and is a great city. Parts of it are dangerous but so was NYC in the 90s. I wouldnt travel half way around the country to go there but if youre in NYC area it os worth visiting.

Ironbound section is cool, lots of Brazilian/latin/spanish/Portuguese people so plenty of cool shit to do. They have Portuguese and a brazillian parade every year. Branch brook park has 2nd largest selection of cherry blossom trees in the country if memory serves and they have a huge festival every year. Even in NJ newark gets a bad rap but its a cool place.

Krug's burgers are tops. But not Tops, that diner is great but waaaaay overpriced. They do make a killer lobster Mac and cheese.

Everything at tops is good, its spendy but worth it. Bigger issue is the huge wait. Also worth it thou.

Any sense of how BNB compares to Brasilia grill? It’s been several years since I went, but that was my usual low-key churrascaria.

Used to have a connection at Fogo de Chao, so that was my “high end” choice.

"In the area" dosen't give us much context, after all Tacobell has the best Mexican food, in the area of my small town.

I was born in Newark, NJ and attended high school in Newark. Great food! Lots of culture/history/personality. Are there areas I'd avoid? Of course, but that's anywhere.

Now I'm hungry for Pulaski BBQ and some pasteis de nata.

Also: it was cool to watch 'War of the Worlds' (2005) be filmed on Ferry Street in the Ironbound.

What are you some type of city spy or robber, the city ain't worth the land it's on. It should be burned and forgotten about...

Super convenient that it's a lot of people's first impression of the USA when they step out of EWR

This but unironically. I don't want to have to deal with the type of tourist who judges the whole state based on Newark. More pretty state parks for me.
