Wonder if conservatives are going to come crawling out of the woodwork to bitch about how everyone who took a loan or has debt they can’t pay back should suck it up on this one like they did for student debt relief.

I promise you, a vast majority of those farmers will happily take the money, still bitch about student loan debt cancelation, vote Republican in the midterms and not lose an ounce of sleep over the mental gymnastics involved.

mooch_the_cat t1_isxd8lo wrote

There are no mental gymnastics involved for them. For them it’s “if it’s for me, it’s good; if it’s for you, it’s not”

1.3bn. The headline casually rounds off $300,000,000.

Not to mention:

> The USDA also provided $31 billion to help nearly a million farmers offset lower sales, prices and other losses due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Government Accountability Office has said.

I’ll put money on the fact that these folks would also tell you with a straight face that they “never received no government bailout like those ivory-tower coastal elites!” Theyre too busy doing “real work” and “paying taxes to support the college loan bailout for basket weaving majors”.

I live in a big farming state and they absolutely do this! Complain about welfare and freeloaders and take a big ol' handout all the time. Too much rain= disaster declaration and handout. Not enough rain = disaster declaration and handout. Granted the local economies would also be hurt if the farmers were not propped up but the fact they are blatant hypocrites is what grinds my gears. Most vote Republican but love that socialism.

I'm not sure the average farmer would say that at all, but I don't know many farmers so I guess I'm not a good source.

fetustasteslikechikn t1_isximpr wrote

This must be more of that socialism they so love to bitch about.

Granted, I'm all for this, I'm just exhausted listening to certain parts of the ag industry bitch about where their money goes while sitting around hands stretched out for subsidies

Nice.

Happy to see this vs their option of selling the land & having mcmansions or new amazon warehouses coming to a town near you. No farm, no food.

Major farms here grow corn or soybeans (shipped to Japan) in rotation. Unless you count indirect food in the corn, it's not food for here.

CheapOil7985 t1_isxseej wrote

I really question if farms that grow corn or soybeans can fail. Land prices suggest it's not likely.

ablackwashere t1_isxtxvb wrote

Plenty around here for sale, rezoned. They must be selling for some reason.

2

CheapOil7985 t1_isxz86z wrote

Likely because land prices are insane. If someone will pay it and no one in the family wants it, it's worth big money, especially close to town

CheapOil7985 t1_isy2wt5 wrote

To be fair, 1 billion dollars is a fairly small amount.

You're acting like no one would take up farming if farms failed.

Now apply the same logic to any other business. No jc Penny's, no clothes.

razorirr t1_isyl7yt wrote

meat products make up 80% of the land usage for 20% of the calories gained.

We can tell 4/5's of farms to go fuck themselves. have 1/5th switch to plant based food on 1/4th the land needed. and have no caloric difference. This also massively reduces water usage, and GHG emissions.

No farms, Same (albiet different type) food.

All these Republicans are super quiet about handouts right now. I suspect some Democrat run states will be suing to stop this just like the GOP is treating student loan forgiveness? Surely the GOP is telling them they're just not meant to be farmers if they can't even pay their bills?
