It is common for first responders to have mental health issues. They try to save the dying. They see the maimed bodies the rest of us are spared from. And in most places they do not make great wages.

Fuck, I had to attempt CPR on my grandfather (he was already gone, but I just followed directions in shock) a couple months ago and I have strong physical reactions to the memory of that first push. CPR is basic first responder stuff. I couldn't imagine the toll the more gruesome aspects take.
