No license; driving after midnight; not his car ...

It's a tragedy but there's so many wrong things in the story.

Was rented to a relative. I'm guessing the teenagers took it for a joyride, and the younger kids went along for fun.

It's probably nothing suspicious. There were two sets of siblings in the car at least. Apparently the driving teen had taken cars out before and gotten in trouble for it (with his family, not legally).

Unfortunately, it was not a joy ride of any kind. The father and his wife forced those kids across state lines to panhandle and told them they couldn't come home until they got a certain amount. The car was rented by an adult family member for this sole purpose. The kids were tired, cold, and begged in a phonecall for a hotel, but the parents said no. The boy at the wheel fell asleep and crashed. These parents are the reason those kids are dead. Also, they're collecting money from a Gofundme that has over $60,000 for burials for the kids, but the bodies were already cremated by the state for FREE. They're just using the GFM to scam more money out of people. It's disgusting. This was confirmed by a close family member who is trying to get the truth out.

It unfortunately happens a lot. Probably every high-school has a group of teenagers who die in a tragic car accident where they were driving dangerously. A lot of the time, there's not even drugs or alcohol involved.

And as tragic as that is, what almost always happens next, takes one of the worst situations imaginable and somehow makes it worse when the parents of the passengers all start suing the parents of the driver and a lot of people around it are forced to pick a side.

Gonna have to charge them as an adult?

Edit: the teen

Edit2: manslaughter

The teen driver is dead. Whether the parents will face negligence charges is TBD.

hulkster1212 t1_jd4u73n wrote

This idea of charging parents for everything children do seems unfair. Yes there are times parents should be held liable, but this seems to be mentioned every time now. Kids are idiots and you can’t watch them 24/7.

I live in NYC. Our CBS station (Channel 2) had a phone conversation with his father. He said that he was told, not to drive without a license or permit, by numerous people in his family. By the sound of it, several times.

It's a tragedy, but once your child leaves the house, all bets are off. Especially if he has no license or permit and told not to drive. That child is now an adult and will be treated as such . However maturity is another story.

He is dead.

impy695 t1_jd71t27 wrote

And even if he wasn't, it's not a guarantee that he'd be charged as an adult in this case. Depending on the specifics, I could see it going either way, and I could see myself being good with either trying him as an adult or juvenile (if he was alive).

That's a lie. The father is covering up for the fact that he and his wife forced those kids across state lines to panhandle and told them they couldn't come home until they got a certain amount. Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but this was confirmed by a close family member. I didn't just make it up off the top of my head.

Okay, we'll trust your non-verified statement.

Is it true? Perhaps, but I'll wait until an investigation is conducted and the results made public, not some rando who claims otherwise.

Okay, cool story bro👍 I don't care whether you believe me or not. However, I will keep advocating for these kids by getting the word out about this. These kids deserve justice!

Apparently the vehicle was consumed in a fire. One child was pulled out and survived.

Earlier reports stated that the surviving kid was riding in the hatchback -- guessing they're leaving this detail out since it's bad message discipline (obviously wasn't wearing a seatbelt).

That's probably a good spot for a small child to sleep when the car isn't moving. I've driven that parkway many times. At night or raining isn't a good road for the unfamiliar.

This shit happens all day, every day.

A 9th grader at my school with no license skipped with a group of friends after lunch, took his mom’s car without permission, drove around downtown like an absolute psycho to show off (only 1 of the 5 kids wore a seatbelt), and rear ended a utility truck that was doing line work in the middle of the road going 45 in a 25. Thankfully no one died, but 2 of the kids were hospitalized for a couple days (not the driver).

Kid got no consequences at home and acts like a completely smug prick every day.

edingerc t1_jd2xquj wrote

It’s so easy to become distracted when driving that an inexperienced driver with a bunch of kids in a car has no chance.

22

EvilGreebo t1_jd35hlv wrote

Based on the damage to the car that looks like about 60-80mph.

The pictures of the crash scene show that the car flat out missed its turn jumped a curb flew through a guard rail and into trees.

This was less likely "distraction" and more likely flat out recklessness.

breemarie99 t1_jd5de86 wrote

Speed has been determined to not be a factor. It was likely distraction or fatigue.

impy695 t1_jd72naw wrote

Modern cars are designed to take as much of the impact as possible which means they look REALLY messed up even at slower speeds. It also is a lot easier than you'd expect for a car to flip in an accident. Add in even a little fire and a relatively slow speed can look horrible.

Even when I got my permit at 16, I’m fairly sure I was restricted to like 1 passenger or something, or family. It’s been so long I’m sure I’m misremembering something.

With just a permit, it usually is only an adult one is allowed to drive with. Never any other kids.

Don't ever try to compare guns to cars. That is not the comparison to make your case, it actually completely breaks it, because that's EXACTLY what proponents of gun control want. The same as automobiles:

  1. Owner information registered with sate agency. (Title + Registration with DMV)
  2. A license to operate, showing that you have met set standards of knowledge and aptitude prior to being allow use of it. (Driver's License and testing.)
  3. Insurance, when said device causes damage or harm to others. (Car Insurance)

Lambda_Lifter t1_jd5jnfk wrote

I'm pro gun and I want all of those things, same with basically everyone else I know that's pro gun. Only the most hardline gun activists care about that shit

Regardless, doesn't change my argument. If you think guns should be illegal, not just the common sense legislation you outlined, you should be calling to ban cars
