So much for CLIMATE change, huh? Wait, shit.

Reasonable_Ticket_84 t1_j9p590j wrote

That's the problem. Global warming was some dumb early messaging and now the right wing idiots meme that shit even though the real and proper description is climate change. And even more proper is "rapid climate change that poses a challenge to way of life for every living thing"

WrightwoodHiker t1_j9r4al6 wrote

Global warming is still the main problem. There was nothing wrong with calling it that, besides the way idiots interpret it. In the real world, extreme heat is increasing and extreme cold is decreasing.

xxxYTSEJAMxxx t1_j9oeejn wrote

Yep, my grandmother (in-law) was just saying that the other day. Sad shit.

She should come to Wisconsin and explain to me why it's been in the 30s and 40s for all of February, our coldest month.

22

Bruch_Spinoza t1_j9otshy wrote

We haven’t gotten any snow in the northeast all year. It’s been mid-40s since November

20

lifevicarious t1_j9p8r66 wrote

In the grandmas defense, your example is just as bad to prove global warming as hers is to disprove it. And I am a believer in climate change.

2

isawagoose t1_j9rqr3a wrote

You're assuming it's an isolated event and not part of a steady trend as it actually is.

2

lifevicarious t1_j9rremo wrote

Im not. But you and the grandma are talking about weather. One month of warmer weather is not climate change. It’s warmer weather like it’s colder in CA.

1

isawagoose t1_j9rrwkk wrote

It's not "one month" of warmer weather. It's a steady pattern of increasingly warmer winters with less and less precipitation. I said February because it's February right now, not because it's a single anomalously warm month.

1

lifevicarious t1_j9rsr6r wrote

You said one February . If you meant all winter say all fucking winter. Don’t blame me for calling you out on what you said as opposed to what you now say you meant. Even if all winter that’s weather. Not global warming. Milwaukee hit a high temp of 62 in Feb in 1984. One month or one winter or one day is weather. Years and decades is climate change. So again, your stated example is just as bad as grandmas.

isawagoose t1_j9rtbb6 wrote

What the fuck do you not understand about the word "trend?" If you're here just to be a pedantic contrarian, shut the fuck up and bother someone else.

0

lifevicarious t1_j9ru998 wrote

Jesus fucking Christ dude. You didn’t say trend. You said all of February. Three fucking weeks is not a trend. It’s not pedantic. If you don’t want to be called out for saying something incorrect don’t say something incorrect. For the third time three fucking weeks of warmer than average is just as stupid as grandma arguing against global warming based on a blizzard where it’s usually warm.

DastardlyMime t1_j9pe2s8 wrote

Same in Michigan outside a couple weeks. It's getting into the 50s today

Same here in Indiana. Although this weeks it’s up in the high 50s. It’s freaking me out on a weird primal level a little bit

I moved here's 5 years ago they're in the polar vortex. It's definitely gotten warmer every year but this year is just scary. Sturgeon spearing on lake Winnebago had to be done from the shore because the ice was so thin nobody would drive on it.

Yea I saw a headline about ‘country braces for blizzard”. And I was here in NC saying “wait, which country because I’m in the mountains and get snow regularly, but forecasts put us in the 70s this week”

Yeah, we hit 80 at my place in the Triangle yesterday. It’ll be hotter today. Fucking nuts.

21

asdaaaaaaaa t1_j9nnn6b wrote

Yeah, it's been swinging between ~40'F and ~80'F. What's crazy to me is we'll probably look back on this fondly at some point, as more extreme weather fluctuations take hold (as I understand it).

Just found out in another thread that today’s high is 70 in Philadelphia and 47 in NYC (probably 50 miles between them longitudinally, if that).

3

t-poke t1_j9oq3rf wrote

It's going to be 55 in St. Louis. It was nearly 70 yesterday.

Perhaps not as warm as Birmingham, but that's easily 30 degrees warmer than it should be this time of year. I'm not complaining at all, but it's just weird for me to see headlines like "Winter weather stretching across the country from Los Angeles to Boston!" and I'm outside yesterday in short sleeves and no jacket like it's April.

Hell, the forecast for the next week looks pretty pleasant. Not as warm as yesterday, but it should be a lot worse in February.

3

ThatsATallGlassOfNo t1_j9pjxco wrote

I'm in Phoenix. Its currently 54. The high for today is 56. It's going to be a high of 65 tomorrow, followed by 71, and then back in the 50s and 60s.

SoCal here. The mountains will look awesome next week when all this clears. Brace yourself for photos of downtown LA a front wide panoramas of snowy mountains.

In the meantime, here’s the live feed from an eagle’s nest (yes real bald Eagle) in Big Bear. https://www.youtube.com/live/B4-L2nfGcuE?feature=share
