My bf and I are looking to adopt a small dog for our new apartment hopefully in the next couple months. We don’t know that many people with pets and aren’t sure how to find the right breeders or adoption organizations for our pet. We want to try to avoid buying from a store. any help will be greatly appreciated!
Everyone always says adopt and don't go to breeders, etc, but then these rescue people want too much information about you. We're getting a dog, too, but without dealing with all that crap. Beg somebody to rescue a dog? I think not.
Had similar experience. Some dog rescues want hundred of dollars too. The shelter I went to sold us a dog that had biting issues without telling us, broke skin within 2 hours of owning the dog, and then asked us to sign a form saying the dog never bit anyone when we brought the dog back.
Really not sure why this is downvoted, unless people support shitty shelters?
If you find the right rescue- it’s not like that at alllll. We got our puppy from Louie’s Legacy. We filled out application that just asked basic info, they called to chat and set up the meet n greet and we took our puppy home that Saturday! I agree some ask soooo many unnecessary questions and god forbid you don’t have a fenced in yard or work from home they don’t accept you. Louie’s fosters in NYC and surrounding areas so they know dogs can be perfectly happy in an apartment :)
Google: "adopt a pet" or "adopt a dog" will show websites with listings from your local shelters.
They wouldn’t have to if people weren’t such human trash and abuse the animals they adopt. Some get an animal without realizing the amount of time, effort, and money it takes to raise an animal. Others adopt animals to help train their dogs for fighting as well.
I don't know where you're located but we adopted a cat from Best Friend Dog and Animal Adoption last November. They're a rescue based in Union County, and the lady who runs the adoption program is really nice and helpful. You might be able to find a dog to suit you from them.

I understand that, but in my opinion, some of them go too far, and it's a huge turnoff.
I had friends who live in MD working with a rescue up here. Went through everything, came up for an in person meet and greet, still didn’t get the dog.
If you are in South Jersey area and are looking for a smaller dog I suggest reaching out to matchdogrescue.org we had a good experience with them. They have weekly adoption events as well where you can go meet the Available dogs.

Depends on where you are in NJ. Burlington County Animal Alliance is a great rescue.
There are a ton of great rescues. Go on petfinder.org and you can search by breed age location and more
adopt, don't shop. check petfinder's website
I think it’s awesome that you‘s want to adopt! My family has used petfinder.org for adopting dogs.
Reddit r/dogs and r/puppy101 both have really fantastic resources about how to find a reputable breeder or shelter, and other tips for how to find a good match for you and how to prepare to bring a dog home. Browse through both of them and you can decide whether you want to adopt or go through a quality breeder. They will help you avoid a backyard breeder or puppy mill. Definitely never buy from a store as they are always puppy mill dogs, and pretty much any breeder you see advertising on social media will probably not be a reputable breeder either.
Keep in mind if might take longer than you expect to get a dog. Reputable breeders often have waitlists. And going through the shelter route may also take a while to get vetted and find a good match for what you are looking for if you want a small dog. Good luck!

We have been trying but our apartment does restrict a fair number of breeds so I think we just have wait for the right fit, thank you!

They may just take a while to respond. They’re pretty thorough with their screening but they don’t require a home visit or any of that nonsense. Adoption fee was $400 for me iirc because my dogs a purebred. A mix may be a bit less

Louie’s legacy animal rescue! Based out of Staten island but they have a lot of dogs and puppies- even some rescued from Amish breeders so they occasionally have doodle mixes and poodles, etc.
