The state really needs to raise the minimum liability amount.
It is not that much more expensive to move to a 100\300 plan from the pitifully low minimum limits, and people fuck themselves financially in the long term because they think they can save a few bucks today.
You will spend the next 20 years with garnishments\etc if you carry minimum insurance and get into an accident with even a modest newer car these days.

Misleading/clickbait title. Per the article, this only affects insurance rates for folks who are only carrying the minimum of liability coverage, because that minimum is what is increasing.

I got hit by a car crossing the street two years ago. I was a pedestrian with the light. They only paid out the minimum $15K per policy. A lifetime of trauma and because of low limits I'm barely compensated. There's nothing scarier than the fire lane at a Shop Rite now.

And yet the state still allows the 'Dollar-a-Day' insurance that carries no liability coverage at all.

The people with the minimum liability plans are usually poor anyways and don’t have any money that could be taken from them in a crash.

I’m surprised this isn’t more common knowledge. There’s probably almost a million people on this plan. If they hit you you’re literally getting nothing. Uninsured/underinsured coverage is a must.
Although I guess it’s marginally better than them driving uninsured, which is what most of them would end up doing. Got to get to work somehow.

Just curious, is this where the "uninsured" coverage I pay on my premium comes into play?

Regardless of how much they end up paying back, they will end up with a judgement against them (destroying their credit), bank accounts and paychecks garnished, etc.

actually less under the "basic" policy option that was recently introduced (the concept being SOMETHING is better than nothing for people).

That is what they told me. They said that type of coverage would cover it

It's like trying to squeeze blood from a stone. They have nothing to take. And then they get right back on the road and do it again to the next person. Shitbags.
I had this happen to my wife a few years ago.

Do you want to know what really increases New Jersey car insurance rates? Subsidizing the state issued car insurance for people who can't afford real insurance. https://njpaip.us/njsaip-nj-dollar-day-auto-insurance/

Honestly I'm not surprised with how expensive cars and medical expenses are nowadays. Imagine hitting a 100k car and you only have $15k liability?
