Thanks for letting me know about this! I read through the link you sent over, but am still a bit confused.

Can I just go to the DMV and claim the exemption by telling them this was a gift from my father?

They ask you how much you paid. You say it was a gift.

I think you get one 'gift' every so often. Forget the interval.

I did it over 10 years ago so I don't remember details, but I do remember that once we got there they told us we don't have to pay sales tax. I didn't know this in advance.
