My wife is pregnant. We're currently renting at $2k a month for a 1 bedroom in Essex county. Anything that is affordable is either run down, too small/no space, or far away. We don't want to live in a city. Below average sized homes are about $3k+ monthly payment after 20% down.

We both have student loans, childcare is going to be expensive. How can anyone do it right now?

I'm not saying we're rich but we should should at least be able to afford an average home.

I really don't know what to do.

Edit: Many people giving me advice simply didn't face the same type of market when they bought their home unless you bought it at the height of the 2008 bubble.
