I think what the person did to you is ok ONLY if there was plenty of room for their car to fit without you hitting your brakes. If I need to let my foot off the gas to let someone in that's cool with me but if you make me hit the brakes because you can't be patient then YOU are a shit driver.
I think the poll options are lacking or misleading. You should signal to make your intentions known, but you should only do so when safe.

There was one car length between me and the person in front of me and my front bumper was past her back bumper. I had to hit the brakes and my horn so she would hit me.

That is not how it SHOULD work but at the same time it's not worth it to get upset or let it ruin your day. Driving in Jersey will break you or make you a very alert driver.

First...which is it? Bumper? or door?
Second, if either of those is true, how did you see her blinker blinking?
I'm not saying your story is shaky...but someone really should be holding the ladder it's standing on.

Shame you deleted your post, I kept a tab open as I wanted to reply and just got delayed.
You forget that you posted on Reddit, land of the spoiled twelve year olds who think everyone should bow before them, and the laws apply to everyone else but them.
Your response wasn't perfect, but then again the other driver was intentionally being an ass. I'd like to say I wouldn't have done the same thing, buttttt... ;) I tend to be aggressive, but I *do* back down when it's apparent I may lose as well.
Don't listen to the a-holes in this thread. Don't be a pushover, just make sure you don't make it worse for yourself. Those preaching "share the road," are the same assholes weaving in and out.

I you put your turn signal on in NY/NJ area asshole behind you will most likely cut you off and won't allow you to merge.

A turn signal is like saying please
Snownel t1_ixjeszs wrote
Turn signal is a "I see the space I'm gonna merge into, this is my warning to you that if you speed up and close that gap out of spite, I'm going fast enough to make this merge that we're both gonna have a bad time" signal for me. Like, when merging onto a highway, turn signal comes on when I'm lined up with the space I'm merging into and gonna make the move in a few seconds.
I try to make space for people that are just humming along with their signal on trying to find a space to merge into, but 9 times out of 10 it's just some fucking schmuck who forgot to turn it off and I just made traffic worse for everyone behind me for no reason.

The answer is always "get out of the left lane"
Katyann623 t1_ixiwuzq wrote
For context as to why I’m asking. I was at a red light in the right hand lane. Light turned green and I started driving forward when I see the person in the left lane put their blinker on and immediately start merging in front of me to avoid the person making a left in front of her. I was moving, it wasn’t like the light had just turned green. So I blew my horn and kept going not letting her merge. And she got mad because I didn’t let her merge.

You had the option to yield your right of way. You decided against it. That's your right...and you might still be a jerk for how you insisted on it. We weren't there and we'll never know...
Ask yourself, why not let her merge? Look at how it's eating at you to the point that you seek out our approval here when all you had to do was ease up, give another human a break and that would've been that.
And you definitely would've had our approval of that.
Katyann623 t1_ixj2085 wrote
I didn’t yield because my front bumper was past her back door when she started moving over and then she was a jerk about me blowing my horn like “hey I’m currently young the space your trying to occupy”. Plus I had a line of 15 cars behind me, she had no one behind her.

Of course. Of course.

It depends what's more important to you:
- being technically correct
- OR being a decent considerate human being
Katyann623 t1_ixj2nk3 wrote
There were 15 cars behind me that I would be holding up by letting her in and none of them let her in either. She could have chosen the right lane earlier on but decided to get in the left only and then cut in to skip the line of cars.

People in all states I’ve driven in the northeast think that just because they put their blinker on they have the right to immediately cut right in. They are going slower than you, and because of the blinker, it’s their constitutional right to cut you off, slow YOU down, just so they can go a tiny bit faster than they were going yet not as fast as you.

Opening is a very vague term, if there is a speeding dipshit I always get in front of them. Normal speed drivers I try to wait until there is enough room for me to fit.
