Google maps makes it appear that to get to Port Authority, my options are pretty much limited to the bus. Is there an additional light rail or train that google maps isn’t including? Thank you so much!

Are the buses pretty reliable?
Light rail to Hoboken path to Christopher street
Is there an app that shows the light rail on the map when looking up directions? Google only shows the bus route for some reason.
Yeah this. I know there’s going to be traffic but how are they typically?
This would take way longer than just getting a bus in, that’s why it doesn’t show up. There are bus only lanes in the Lincoln tunnel that make bus commuting much easier, especially from weehawken. If you get a bus on 30th street and bergenline or park you’ll only wait like 5-10 min and it’ll be a less than 15 minute trip into port authority. I used to take buses into PA every day for work this way. Unless there’s unusually bad traffic it’s really not that bad. I also really didn’t mind taking the jitney buses which make it easier. They’re cheaper and run way more frequently.
A bus wouldn't be so much faster. Port Imperial to Hoboken is 12 minutes, Hoboken to Christopher street is 10 minutes. Also that puts you in the West Village vs Port Authority.
Perhaps swim?
Helicopter could be a good idea too
Depends on the part of town. In the Bluffs, you would be taking the boulevard east buses which are pretty terrible. They get super packed so you should expect to stand and have full buses pass you. In the heights you would be off the 123 route which is not too bad. I am less familiar with the waterfront & shades area, you would either be taking the 126 or the river road buses, they run very frequently and probably aren’t a bad option.
It would be the Port Imperial area.
Deselect “Buses” in “Options” and the light rail directions will pop.
Also, make sure you set your departure to a weekday.
I would do light rail to Hoboken then PATH to the city. You could try the buses as well. The problem with the buses isn’t the reliability but how crowded they get. Weehawken is the last town before NYC so by the time the buses get there sometimes there’s not even standing room left. Also the lines at the Port Authority on the way home are not the most fun way to end your workday. The train is lower stress.
The ferry is arguably the best way if it works for you. It’s just super expensive (like 3 or 4x more than the alternatives).
I’m also considering paulus hook/newport area of JC. Thoughts? Are those areas as safe as Weehawken?
If you don’t happen to be close to the light rail it’s a moot point, it’s far away enough from some parts of weehawken that it would add time if you had to travel there to begin with
Paulus Hook/Newport are both very safe. I'd recommend Paulus Hook over Newport though. Newport is really dead at night and doesn't have much of a neighborhood feel. It depends on what you're looking for though.
Overall I'd recommend Jersey City. Especially if you're working in the Village. Easy commute.
I was on the ferry a few years ago and saw a guy paddle boarding in the Hudson. That could be an option.

No one tell OP what happened in Weehawken in 1804.
But either of those areas in JC would be fine. For your commute, I'd recommend Newport since the PATH train that goes to 33rd street would stop at Newport station.
Quiet and convenient. I’ll be working 60+ hours a week in the city and will most likely be getting home pretty late.
