Too late for that. I did google native snakes and to me it looked like a Garter Snake.

Yikes...doesn't look like a garter to me. They are usually dark greenish and have a yellow stripe down the length of their back.

I hope your laundry was somewhat accessible from outside so a "native" just happened to slither in...if so letting it go outside was the best choice...unless it was a lost pet.

Given the right conditions it doesn't take long for invasive species to take hold...look at south Florida with pythons and iguanas.. and PA / NJ with the dammed spotted lantern flies...among hundreds of other invaders...

According to wiki there are 35 species of this snake that we know of.

If it did crawl in from outside, I'd guess it's a northern brown snake....doesn't look like any garter I've ever seen...but I'm no zoologist, just a turtle rescue guy...

Yeah definitely not a garter. The coloring could work but the pattern and lack of stripe aren't a garter. Their color does vary a lot. I think just a brown snake.

In general, you’re right, but this appears to be a northern brown snake, which is native here

Yes, I noted its a brown snake in other comments...I'm sure releasing this native should be good in nj...
