I think basically all of the beaches except Sandy Hook are fair game. Don't metal detect at Sandy Hook because they don't want you poking around in the proving grounds.

I often see folks in my local parks. No idea what they're finding. And, as already mentioned, any beach.

The US Army used Sandy Hook as a weapons testing location from 1874 until the early 1900s.

I saw people using metal detectors at old churches. Maybe they asked permission? Not sure.
