Aside from bloated salaries biggest costs are for what maintenance and fuel? Diesel is still really high, the cost of everything steel is very high, paint for the bridges etc is over the top expensive right now. I could see making a case but first they should be doing some trimming of fat.

Or checking how all these industries are claiming inflation as an excuse while making record profits.

metsurf t1_iwwgxmf wrote

I work in one of those industries and we are making record profit dollars but paying record prices for raw materials. All of our price increases are just to maintain the margin percentage. Our margins this year are within a tenth or two of a percent of our historical margin percent. There is still competition for business.

Cost of living in NYC is also 154% higher then average so they are STILL underpaid for the market which is the crazy part. The real issue is they probably only need about 5,000 staff. Half the guys i knew that work there have the easiest most low key / low effort jobs that any equivalent job with be 3x the amount of work for 30% less pay and much worse benifits

NJ got 6.8 billion for highways and 1.1 billion for bridges under Biden’s infrastructure bill. Bull fucking shit they need to raise tolls right now

Nothing says inflation is a problem like arbitrarily and permanently raising prices.

Fuck you Port Authority. Want to cover costs? Fire all all your useless executives with shit ideas.

lol inflation on a tunnel that has been there for decades and generates billions of dollars apparently costs more. this is about lining pockets not improving anything.

doglywolf t1_iwvq4qp wrote

it more then pays for itself - but they have the PAPD to pay for out of that budget and all the inflated salaries , not to mention sweetheart deals with construction companies that cost 12x what the projected expenses should be.

They could start their own construction department and only have them work 3 months out of the year and sit around for 9 months and still be ahead of schedule and come in cheaper they some of these contracts.

Look at the Holland tunnel it cost 49 million to build , todays dollars that about 800 million today.
Yet somehow making a new train tunnel cost 3-4 BILLION plus over runs.
And a new transit tunnel is said to cost double that .

Inflation, eh. It’s not like the Port Authority needs to come up with an excuse to increase the the gravy train it already is. Imagine being fortunate enough to be politically connected to that corrupt cash cow to get employed there.

They need to pay for the new replacement to the metro card system that was supposed to last another 18 years and still isnt paid off itself .

coreynj2461 t1_iwuhx9s wrote

Still remember when people were pissed it was going up to $8. They tried playing off the increase and told people to take mass transit. Sadly the bridges and tunnels will probably be $20 in 2-4 years

I'm surprised, usually they go with the "don't worry we'll put the money into mass transit...eventually..." excuse.

Or last time when the revenue from toll and fare hikes just happened to be exactly the same cost as the ostentatious marble-covered shopping mall they built for the wtc path station. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, but it shouldn't have been built with our fucking money.

4

doglywolf t1_iwvy3tv wrote

You build stuff like that with excess or sponsored money or making deals with companies . The era of the art deco style buildings that look good and marble city halls with beautiful design was an era of well run cities with surplus to budgets being well managed . The story behind the marble in that place is one of the most corrupt things ive ever heard too - look it up but the TL:DR is they insisted on imported specialty marble no higher quality then what they could of got locally for 10x the price AND its a marble not made for high volumes so needs DAILY Maintenance when they could of got marvel that looked almost identical that was lower maintenance and better for high volumes at less then have the cost. But they wanted the "Italian marble " from the company one of the decisions makes had "trusted relationship with"

All that is fine for personal choice in your home or even a private business , not with our money.

I for one am all for making things look better in the public domain instead of all these cookie cutter prefabs - but spending ALITTLE bit more to make it look good on tax payer money is mostly ok. Spending a massive and excessive amount to pad the pockets of friends of your IS NOT

You know, the more I read about the absolute greed and graft of the government, be it local, state, or federal, the more libertarianism starts to make sense. They might be onto something.

The government steals billions of dollars from us every year and yet we never see an improvement in the quality of life for us working class people. I’ve been using NJ Transit and Port Authority services for almost a decade; using NJ Transit buses to go to and from work in NYC. Tolls have gone up and bus tickets have all gone up in prices too. And yet there’s nothing to show for it. Same shitty tunnel and bridge crossings, buses have actually gotten worse in terms of delays or straight up not showing up, same awful traffic situations. Like…where’s the supposedly “better service” they told us they were going to spend our money on?

Nexis4Jersey t1_iwwsvma wrote

NJT is in a bind here , the PA should give them a discount on tolls until the new terminal is built. And the bus lane should also operate in the afternoons which would reduce delays...
