I always think how utterly miserable it must have been back then. Hiking all over in the cold and wet, eating whatever gruel was available, getting infections and illness. Using outhouses in the cold. No antibiotics, painkillers, or heat.
We are so soft these days.

Say goodbye to your wife. Hike for weeks to months. Tired, weak, sick. Show up to battlefield and get stabbed by a rusty bayonet.
Wounded for days then die in agony.
