Last week they were filming and I was able to get right up by the fence with barbed wire but it seemed like they were just doing a few test runs

I've passed the place more times than I can count in the dead of night after work. It used to be a psych ward and may one day become apartments (or so I'm told).

Assuming that's true, just..

I was driving past there earlier today (it's a couple minutes from my parent's house) and they were definitely getting ready for something. Saw a few trucks enter the property.

I didn't really know this until recently but fun fact, canonically, Gotham City is located in South Jersey by where AC is lol

Murphy was smart to restore the film and tv tax credits. Translates to money being spent in NJ and jobs.

This is really cool! It looks to me like they’re filming a prison scene or a mental hospital scene or something. Zooming in, I see lots of 1970s or 1980s style police cars, ambulances, a few news trucks. Plus the search lights - with all that detail they must be shooting outside soon, too.

We’ve had a few movies being filmed in Elizabeth lately, as well. “Day of the Fight” was filming here in September or October last year on the backstreets of the Peterstown section, and “Your Monster” was filming somewhere on East Jersey near Broad (either near or at the old Ritz theater).

At least 2 major studios (Netflix and Lionsgate) are setting up shop in NJ, too, thanks to the tax breaks (which I think is awesome), so we should be seeing a lot more of this type of thing in the coming years.

A user commented his blog that has photos of the inside but not every floor is wrecked. Theres still floors that look okay when i went and those were the ones with pictures of people who worked there and work party photos everywhere. Lots of stuff left behind as per usual with these places. It was abandoned when i went cops kinda patrol it. Place is full of asbestos tho.

In Ringwood they're filming for a movie called "Y2K" in a few days, allegedly with Jenna Ortega. Really cool that they're doing that in my town, but of course it's because our shopping center looks like it rotted at the turn of the millennium

It’s wild, that for all the government screws up, they somehow mastered a very specific brand of uneasiness when they built these state hospitals/sanitariums. There’s a building on Long Island that’s just a larger version of this one that was once the country’s most populated psych ward

I was wondering what all the cranes and temporary fences and people standing at the fences, looking at the building were all about earlier this week!

In this same thread, I read the blog with photos of inside. Indeed creepy. But what got me was your 'children's shoes' comment, when I was reading the comments from the blog..... This one in particular. And many other comments on that website with child abuse recollections from people who used to be patients there:

AnonymousApril 11, 2014 at 10:29 AM Not sure why but my previous comment today posted or seemed to and is no longer here. I am the person who's story ABNJ referred to sending a chill down his spine. My post said I was at a loss for words and encouraged anyone who was abused here look online as they will find at least one other person also seeking justice. The name of the place I was in out behind this hospital was "The Essex County Emergency Children's Shelter". There was also a ward for disabled kids in the hospital, I think 4th floor, that was run by a "private" firm for the County. The main hospital building was only partially occupied since the 50's maybe earlier and the open part was used as the County Geriatric Center until it closed in the 70's. This is why some pics of the place look like very old decay and some look like its only a couple decades since abandonment. Weird note; One of the guys who bought it is the son of a guy who was a buddy of my dad.

I lived in Bloomfield for a while and was so amazed whenever I drove past this building. It just screams "horror film." When I looked it up, I was surprised it was out of use for so long and only in one film. Honestly excited it's being celebrated in this film.

Oh and tangent... I hoped to find local legends and such when I researched it. But as I recall, I could only find accounts of former patients who had fond memories of excellent caregiving as children with infectious diseases.

What costs? I work on the industry so I'd be happy to answer questions but you don't know what you're saying. Even with a 5 figure per day cost it doesn't amount to much..especially when were talking about such a huge building like that. It costs high 6 figures to keep that place from degrading. If it was operating it would be millions a year to maintain.

Some shoots may be only a day or a week. We're really not talking about that much money in the grand scheme of such a big building

That’s really cool! My oldest son took a film/video editing course throughout his 4 years in High School, but after graduation he decided that working with his hands (plumbing, carpentry, etc) was more his style.

Do you know of any websites or Twitter/Facebook/etc accounts that regularly update what, when & where filming is taking place in the greater NJ/NYC area? There was a NYC Filming Twitter account I used to follow a while back, but whoever was running it stopped posting. It’d be awesome to have a resource like that, whether it’s to avoid an area due to traffic or scope it out from a distance (so as not to disturb the actors & crew).

It's more localized. You'd have to find the communities who post about that. Like montclair has a newsletter somewhere. The jobs list is confidential to our union members but it's just a list of jobs and the main location/stage
