I was born in 79 and am applying for a passport for the first time. My original birth certificate, the one I’ve used for everything I ever needed something like that for doesn’t have my parents listed on it.

It’s only got my name, sex, place of birth, and date of birth. It’s still got the original seal.

I applied for my passport today and the courthouse where I live now accepted it, but it’s got me a little stressed that it doesn’t look anything like a modern birth certificate.

For example, it looks a lot like this one: https://www.fdeus.com/images/fdeus/birth_certificates/birth-certificate-new-jersey-local-not-acceptable.jpg

Any advice?

You can always go back to the town's Vital Statistics department and get a new one made.

I had that one and no one would take it. Why? Because someone stole all of the originals from Hudson County. I had to go to Trenton, from Hazlet, to get a new one. That was a fun day.

Birthday certificates look completely different now. 20 bucks at city hall will get you a new one.

Short version: Those used to be acceptable, but not anymore.

The solution for both is the same: Go to the Vital Records Department and get a new one, either at Trenton or at the town that originally issued the certificate.

In 2016 I needed a passport relatively quickly (a few weeks maybe...I forget). I went to the office in Manhattan and they processed all my info, took my money and documents, and then told me that since I lived close to the Municipality where by birth certificate was (about 20 minutes from my house) that I needed to get a copy with my parents info and come back to Manhattan to finish the transaction.

However, they told me if I didn't live so close and/or my timeframe for needing it was sooner, they would have given me my passport with what I provided them.

That said, a lot could have changed since 2016...or maybe not.
