I lived in Hackensack for 4 years until 2018. I still have friends who live in the area, and things are changing pretty quickly these days.

First, I’ve driven by Royal Towers a billion times (Juicy Platters is great, btw). It looks a bit run down and is in a lousy location if you don’t have a car. But that Stop and Shop is pretty good, and I used the dry cleaners in that plaza as well.

I lived on Prospect Ave. I would recommend living on Prospect. Extremely safe, nice to walk in the evenings, excellent bus service for NYC commutes. You’ll still probably need a car though. You’ll be close to all the Paramus malls, especially the Whole Foods, which was my favorite supermarket in the area. Chit Chat Diner is one of the best diners in the state. It’s a take out/delivery paradise. Walking to the train (Essex St) is doable but you’ll have to cross dicier areas of town.

It’s definitely a city on the rise. Tons of development, especially downtown. Great for your 20’s if you work in NJ/can’t afford Jersey City/Hoboken/NYC.

Keep in mind, too, that the dicier parts of Hackensack are not super dicey. You can walk to Anderson Street Station too, so either train station is doable. The bus service on Prospect is quite good, as midnight_thunder said.

It's not bad. A lot of new development. Public transit is the toughest part. Many new buildings have been put up or are being leased up right now.

I moved to NJ from LI 20+ years ago. Lived on Prospect Ave in Hackensack before buying a house a few towns away. Need more information to help you. Budget, are you commuting to work, own a car? Respectfully, there are a large number of Indian expats on visas living in some of the complexes, if this is of importance to you.

Prospect Ave has a range of mid rise buildings, rentals and co-ops. Tons of new construction in The Sack or downtown area. Other apartments scattered throughout.

Just did a quick google. Its on the southern side of the sack. A lot of the development and "rejuvenation" of the sack is more on the northern end around the hospital. Its also more residential in the north, and happening than the south.

Its safe, worst you have to worry about is someone busting into your car, but if you can swing it, especially if you are younger, i'd look more towards the northern end of town. That is where you will find the good bars, food, etc, and is more convenient for the train.
