Is it like a constant hour long line at each ?
ComprehensiveReview0 t1_j5i7yxs wrote
Yes

Not necessarily. But do a drive by and check them out. It’s colder and not as many people want to wait outside. Start checking around 11
Dispatches547 t1_j5jgjxt wrote
It's not an hour. Pepes usually 20 mins
HeadyRoosevelt t1_j5jrg41 wrote
If you go during off peak hours the line will be under 20 min.

Try Zeneli on Wooster. They are an Albanian family who learned to make pizza in Naples. Most authentic pizza I’ve ever had — just like pizza in Sorrento.
brewski t1_j5kx9x1 wrote
It's very good. Just not New Haven style.
Longhorns_ t1_j62k68y wrote
I agree. Zeneli is maybe a little better than Dallas-based Cane Rosso but not somewhere to take people from out of town when we’re in New Haven. I’ve had Neapolitan pizza everywhere, including in Italy. But the New Haven char is the specialty here. Wait in line at the New Haven Big Three like Texans wait in line for top Texas barbecue. It’s worth it.

Just had some last Friday. Having had da Michelle, Sorbillo, etc in Naples...well idk if it's at that level but it certainly took be back.

I’d go to Modern for the best experience

They have lines too

I’m a Zuppardi’s fan these days. Better than Pepe’s and Sally’s for sure. If you have your heart set on the big two though, don’t get take out. The pizza will steam in the box and get gooey. It’s better to tough out the wait in line. They move fast.
brewski t1_j5kxq8q wrote
This is an important point about getting it to go. Like driving a new car off the dealership lot, a pizza loses much of its value as soon as the lid closes on the box.
Zuppardi's is excellent pie and always worthy of mention in these discussions. But if you're coming in from out of town you should really go to one of the big 3.
Hyasfuq t1_j5iep0m wrote
Get there before 6am and you will be fine.

Protip for Pepe's: the smaller white building towards the back of the parking lot to the left of the brick building that is closer to the street is called The Spot and it's the original location. Some people even like it better. But it's also Pepe's and the line is often shorter.

Is this open these days? I thought it closed a couple years ago

Fwiw I’ve never waited more than 15 minutes at Modern

And to me it's the best. Mushroom, sausage and extra cheese... Heaven in a box.

Did Sally’s re-open yet from their renovation? They were still closed as of last week

They opened back up yesterday

Honestly, bar has really good pizza and you’re not going to wait forever for it. I like Sally’s and pepes but you wait so long and bar will seat you in 10 min
Tinfoil_ninja t1_j64mixx wrote
Sally's Insider here.
On a Saturday, doors usually open at 11. Dining room is full by 11:30-12, and after 12, there's a line. It's a pretty quick turnover for the lunch hour and getting takeout usually takes about 45 minutes at that time.
Past 3, line wait times can be an hour or more depending on the flow of people, and if a random bus of 30 people stops in which doesn't happen often, but more often than one would think.
Basically, if you can wait an hr for a seat, you're good.

Sally’s is under new ownership, it’s really gone downhill. Wouldn’t make a special trip for them.

Went in November. Still as delicious as ever before
brewski t1_j5kx4fa wrote
New ownership, yes. Downhill, nope. Still amazing.
green_lemonade t1_j6h93fn wrote
It was touch and go for a while. 2 years ago was borderline inedible levels of char, they served it without a second glance. Last summer they hit it out of the park every time I went.
In general, difficult to work with fuel at high heat + super thin crust = sometimes its going to be overdone. Nature of the game

You can schedule an order ahead for pick up, starting after midnight the day of. Otherwise if you don’t at least call ahead, you will find yourself in a very long line.

Next Door Restaurant, pizza as good as any of the big three with no wait, a solid beer selection, good cocktails and a pretty place as well
Plantpoweredbeeyotch t1_j5k3hrd wrote
Neither of them are that good or worth the wait. Recommend modern and just order it to go
tufticles t1_j5i6vln wrote
Yes to both. I usually call ahead and get takeout
