I’m a recently single 25 y/o woman about to move to New Haven, and I can’t stand dating apps. How is dating in the city without them? Are there any good places or ways to meet people the old fashioned way? Thanks in advance!

Edit: bonus points for advice on how to meet people into music, film, the arts in general, or the outdoors! 🙏

MakeHaven but to be clear it’s not a place to hit on people / get hit on by people, it’s a community organized around shared interests. So it depends what the OP means by “the old-fashioned way”.

There’s a number of meetup groups where you might find people with like interests.

To be honest, it’s been multiple times with multiple people who’s names I don’t know. I’m actually leaving Makehaven for a number of reasons—they are wildly disorganized, people have disrespected equipment to the point it doesn’t work, and are very glib when it comes to problems being addressed to the point that it creates a very unwelcoming environment under the guise of it being very welcome. It’s unfortunate because I was very excited to join but I have had nothing but issues (including my card being charged additional fees). It’s honestly disappointing because it’s an awesome concept.

FYI the reporting form doesn’t require you to know their name, but obvs it’s up to you whether you’re gonna do all that work, esp if you’re already leaving. I wish it had been a more satisfying experience for you.

I'm really sorry to read this. One thing I love about makehaven is that is has a very open and diverse community that breaks traditional gender norms. If you and others are not feeling comfortable there, by all means let the staff know so we don't erode this community.

gather coffee is a cafe on state street centered around socializing with others. They host events almost every night, including social sober nights, open mic, murder mystery, trivia, and more

edit: you can also host your own event night there if you wish.

Eventbrite or meetup are likely your best options for meeting people naturally. I know there are film event groups (like book clubs) through the library. There are also lots of arts groups on the green during summer, but it's not exactly about meeting people. More watching.

Speed dating events come around every now and again. Those can be fun depending on your extroversion. Other than that, there are live music events (like gather and bars). You can always volunteer if you want to meet people as well.
