Flying to Hartford is probably the easiest but limited direct flights. I think JetBlue only has one daily direct flight. Personally I like flying into NYC (usually JFK) and spending an hour or two in NYC before taking the Metro North from Grand Central yo New Haven. You can also fly direct via Breeze to white planes and then Uber buts it’s a $90 Uber.

I've flown out of and into all the New York area airports and out of Bradley a bunch of times. Trust me, fly into and out of Bradley if you can. You'll likely be in New Haven within an hour of getting off the plane. NYC airports may take you anywhere from 3 to 5 hours to get to New Haven. You just never know about traffic. It can be gridlock from the parking lot all the way to Bridgeport, CT before it opens up. I'm an Uber driver and refuse to drive west toward the NYC airports. And I love NYC, but i value my time. You're flying from L.A. and I imagine you'll want to kick your feet up and grab a beer or a bite to eat as quickly as possible. Bradley is a hidden gem of an airport. Good luck.

Thank you so much for that insight! I really appreciate it and will likely take this route as my primary route (:
