Hi folks,

It looks like I need to replace my roof, and so it seems a good time to install some solar panels.

Has anyone on here been through this? Any advice for programs/companies?

Thanks for anything you might share.

yes! just picked a vendor last week - we went with sunpower which is a little pricier but highest quality and great experience so far. our average monthly UI bill is $250 and will go down to $166 a month for a 25 year loan with the federal tax credit. get ready to get bombarded with calls from some of the options if you fill out one of those “get solar quotes” sites. feel free to DM with questions/if you want a referral!

I used Silverline Restoration for my roof - they used GAF architectural shingles with a 50 year life. I have a simple gable roof and they weren’t too pricey ($7500 total). I used Sunpower for my solar panels. As someone mentioned above, they’re a little pricier but they’ve been around since the 80s and their panels have a very low degradation rate. Also they have a 20 year warranty for panels, inverters, roof leaks, and maintenance. Make sure you tally up your electricity usage for a year so that you’re not oversold a bigger system than you need. A few companies I interviewed tried to sell me a system that was way larger than I needed and therefore way more expensive.

Just understand that unless you’re paying cash or financing independently from the solar company, you are encumbering the property. This could limit the number of buyers should you choose to sell before they’re paid off.
