Sorry to hear that :-(.
Good friends of mine had their car stolen from in front of their house in Fair Haven. It got taken for a joyride, then abandoned ni North Haven; police recovered it a few days later. It had some interior damage but no other issues, and they just drove it across the country last month. So, yes there's hope for you!

NHPD here. We recover stolen cars almost daily. Some are jacked up, others have barely a scratch. If yours is a Hyundai/Kia, the steering column is probably going to be ripped out though.

Mine was recovered, after the thief drove it into a pole.
Would’ve been cheaper for me if they hadn’t.

My car was just stolen last week Saturday at 5 am had it back by 10 pm. Had video of a guy breaking window and taking off with it.

There are no more chop shops. Every car gets recovered. It’s just the condition it will be in you have to worry about.

Yes, it was a Kia. Thank god it was a rental. But still got it back that day. Cops found it parked about 1/2 mile from the house. Guess he didn't want to walk anymore.

I had my old Honda Accord stolen two or three times (honestly can’t remember) and it was found each time! Granted, the first time is when they messed up the ignition (which made it easier to steal subsequent times) and the battery was stolen.
Tbh the absolute worst part is that police will have the car towed if it’s parked illegally. Given that carjackers aren’t the best at parking your car in orderly fashion, your car will be towed and you will be given a phone call once you can be located. Meanwhile, your car will rack up daily storage fees at the towing facility. You can’t get your car back until you pay the towing fee, and you will continue to accrue rent until you get your car out. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to you, but I had a $400 bill to pay for my car getting jacked.

> steering column
Why's that? Something to do with air bags?
Admirable_Ad_5034 t1_j9bb99n wrote
That’s how they hot wire them. Bust open the steering column and eventually you can rip down the ignition to a small hole where a usb charging cord can be jammed in and used to start the car.
You can see videos about this by searching for the Milwaukee Kia boys

Car (Kia) was stolen in Bristol and found in Hamden 48 hours later by police. Insurance covered rental vehicle, tow and damage (mainly steering column where wires were pulled) and cleaning. Out of pocket only $100. Theft deductible can be different than collision deductible.

Yes . Wish I didn’t get it back .

Was it a Ford Bronco by any chance?

Ah that makes sense

Yeah, it’s design flaw in certain years of those makes. Once the ignition is exposed you can turn them on/off at will.

Yes my best friend had her car stolen a few years ago and found it a few days or a week later… there’s always hope!

Mine was stolen from my house in Hamden - it was recovered a few days later with very little damage. They smoked about 20 packs and ashed them inside so there were huge piles of ash and the smell has never gone away. There was also some bullets left behind. They also programmed their phones into my CarPlay system which I found odd. I never heard an update about the case.

Not me, but my father. He left the car running while running into an ice cream shop years back. He owned a couple dry cleaners and was transporting clothes between locations…..included in that were some police uniforms. The thief’s abandoned the car unharmed after popping the trunk and seeing them

Someone I know had their car stolen from a school parking lot. Had the event captured on camera but couldn't ID the perpetrator. Car wasn't found until it was totaled and abandoned.

Had mine get stolen and then recovered 2 days later on Blake street. Console was messed up, glove box was broken and stupid stuff like tire pressure gauge was stolen. All in all cost about $1k to fix, which sucked. It’s just one of those shitty things to deal with but certainly not unique to the city.
gygim OP t1_j9dx2uo wrote
Does he do a good job getting it cleaned out?

My 97 Honda Accord was recovered a week after, and they let me know a week after that. That meant it had run up about $500 in just storage fees at the tow yard, not including the tow.
Definitely make a call every day to see if it’s been recovered.

On the one hand, glad to know it wasn't just me or my local police/towing duo, but on the other, this shit fuckin sucked. It was a '96 Accord for me in 2011, and you can correctly the assume the guy driving the '96 Accord in 2011 did not have $400 just lying around, savings or otherwise. (Thankfully I no longer have an empty savings account).

Yes! Well not me, but a friend of mine had her car stolen, was found a few days later abandoned but no damage done, was most likely just a couple of kids who eventually ran out of gas

Yes, my cousin had his vehicle stolen. He had to use his parents car to track down his own vehicle and called the cops when he found it.
