I mean I guess just know city rush hour can be hectic. Wanted to hear from some locals
Phonervia t1_j95m1lm wrote
Going out of New Haven isn’t bad but traffic is still crappy if you have to take 8 or the Merritt parkway. But that’s because those roads are terrible. New Haven is the place to live.
____water t1_j95mdym wrote
I mean I would have to take 63 to 8 but not till Naugatuck, or I could take 69 all the way to 84.
Would that be any commute to be worried about?
NATO1092 t1_j95o8zq wrote
What time? Usually starts to back up a little around bridgeport 730 8....like 25 30 prob from westville
montvilleredwood t1_j95oh8v wrote
That route shouldn’t be terrible.
KawhiJelly t1_j95qge2 wrote
It's a 30 minute commute, not bad.

It’s a nice ride until you get close To Waterbury
pleasantpodcasts t1_j95r8r1 wrote
Rt 69 brings you right into Waterbury. I do it all the time from Wooster sq, about 45 min, but from westville you're only like 30 min away. Plus in the morning you won't have to go through downtown traffic. There won't be much traffic on 69 unless you get stuck behind a bus or something. Shouldn't be a bad commute

I used to commute Wallingford to Plainville, which is about half of the area you’re talking about. It was rough since 15 is two lanes (it moves even when congested, but the smallest obstacle slows everyone down) and 691 was…. stressful… for me, during morning rush. That was my experience anyway, good luck.
jaesmoke t1_j95z04n wrote
Used to work in Farmington and lived off whalley and would take 69 all the way to 84 daily and if u get it early enough it’s not bad. A bit worse on the way home
buried_lede t1_j9619fw wrote
Based on years ago, mind you, among commutes I would think that one is not really bad, even taking the Merritt to 8. I knew a Waterbury city employee who chose Westville to live.
203guy1970 t1_j964gva wrote
I do it everyday. Rt34 to Rt8, never any traffic unless there's an accident or the state decides to close a lane for construction (which they do occasionally). Same with the drive home. Traffic is always going the opposite direction.
Edit: school busses on 34 are a bitch but very narrow window 7:20 till about 7:35.

84 W outside of Waterbury can be a parking lot. Try to avoid. I know there are ways to spend very little time on 84 I just can’t remember details.

Why not live closer to where you work?

63 to 67 to route 8 from westville to Watertown was 35 minutes… against traffic , rarely delayed outside of new haven

I said if it’s not logistical I would consider closer places? Just wanted an idea of how long the commute is

I drive from Hamden to Waterbury. I go down to Woodbridge and then through Seymour to route 8 to Waterbury. Barely any traffic, ever. Takes about 25 minutes.
____water t1_j97z06t wrote
That’s actually really interesting to hear was staying to Westville side of new haven cause I figured Hamden would have more traffic cutting through New Haven.
awebr t1_j98424s wrote
Got it, just thinking that if you’re concerned about traffic and you’re looking to move somewhere, don’t intentionally put yourself in a place that forces you to commute by car and contribute to traffic
____water t1_j984syk wrote
That’s true just don’t want to have to drive 30 mins to have something to do on my off time. Not from ct so looking for something more familiar
RedditZhangHao t1_j992ea0 wrote
From Hamden, prospective route(s) and time(s) vary based on potential starting point. To drive to Waterbury, traveling via New Haven is an unusual option (e.g., never from northern Hamden where back roads to Rt 8 or travel via Cheshire to I-84 may be alternatives; Centerville or Spring Glen neighborhoods via Rt 15 to Woodbridge to Seymour via Rt 8 to Waterbury; maybe only travel via New Haven if near Hamden/New Haven border).

I drive this route a lot. 40 minutes drive using route 34 to route 8 north.

Explain. The majority seems to think the opposite. What’s ur commute and what time?
Professional-Tour621 t1_j99tjlk wrote
Did it for 5 years. It’s horrible
____water t1_j99uka3 wrote
But like from where? Where the traffic? Or u hate driving not sure what u mean haha. Everyone else has been saying the opposite so just wanted some explanation

You would have to leave early enough or late enough to avoid the school bus traffic in westville.
____water t1_j99uq1g wrote
Is 720am early enough?
Professional-Tour621 t1_j99uw36 wrote
It should be early enough but being that New Haven has magnet schools and very little neighborhood schools, bus pickup times begin around that time. For example , kid could live in Westville but go to high school at any of the almost 10 high schools New Haven has.
brewski t1_j99uyfo wrote
I found that getting through New Haven was of the worst parts. I lived in East Rock and getting to rt 34 took forever. I ended up taking Whitney up into Cheshire.
I did not enjoy that commute. Did it for about 6 months and that was enough.
____water t1_j99v8l6 wrote
Where was ur commute to? Doesn’t 34 go more towards nyc so I think I’d be avoiding that traffic.
I’m looking on towns on the outter edge of new haven to avoid having to drive through New Haven at all.
brewski t1_j99vses wrote
It was north of Waterbury off rt 8. 34 goes northwest and runs into rt 8, which goes directly up to Waterbury.
____water t1_j99vy9y wrote
Would 63 to 8 up in nagatuck not be good route? Not many people mention it but seems to be in same direction and more direct?
brewski t1_j99wijv wrote
Maybe. Usually the quicker you get to a real highway the better. Those state roads have lights and traffic. So really the answer depends on where you're starting from. In this day and age, I would ask Google maps. Plug in a day and time (e.g. Monday 7am) and try some different options. It's been a long time since I've had to commute anywhere that I couldn't bike to.
Good luck with the new job.
Phonervia t1_j95ll43 wrote
On Google maps you can throw in the time you want to leave at and it gives you the average commute time based on the time you want to arrive or leave
