I found that getting through New Haven was of the worst parts. I lived in East Rock and getting to rt 34 took forever. I ended up taking Whitney up into Cheshire.
I did not enjoy that commute. Did it for about 6 months and that was enough.

Where was ur commute to? Doesn’t 34 go more towards nyc so I think I’d be avoiding that traffic.
I’m looking on towns on the outter edge of new haven to avoid having to drive through New Haven at all.

It was north of Waterbury off rt 8. 34 goes northwest and runs into rt 8, which goes directly up to Waterbury.

Would 63 to 8 up in nagatuck not be good route? Not many people mention it but seems to be in same direction and more direct?

Maybe. Usually the quicker you get to a real highway the better. Those state roads have lights and traffic. So really the answer depends on where you're starting from. In this day and age, I would ask Google maps. Plug in a day and time (e.g. Monday 7am) and try some different options. It's been a long time since I've had to commute anywhere that I couldn't bike to.
Good luck with the new job.
