They gave us like 6 months of runway before the hikes. I tried to urge everybody to switch to Direct Energy at 13 cents/kwh

Yeah there were a bunch of posts encouraging others to switch a few months back. I feel really bad for anybody who didn’t and is now throwing away buckets of cash every month. I got locked in for 13c for 3 years.

TIL that August 1st is "right before winter."

The utility companies in NH are allowed to adjust their rates twice a year but it must be approved by the NH Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Here's their release authorizing the $0.22556/KwH rate back in June. It was widely covered in the press and discussed here quite a bit.

Sounds like you got all the motivation to go do something to make the change you’re looking for! That’s the great thing about democracy. If you go ahead and lead a cause that you believe in, and get anough people motivated to back you, you can lead by example and make things happen!

Uh, you? "...right before winter..." is not August 1st. And since the rate was announced in June, your complete surprise at the cost says more about how little you've paid attention to things than it does about Eversource.

I mean go ahead and bitch about the rate, a lot of us on this subreddit did in June and July but don't treat it as a surprise six months later.

"Eversource Exec?" LOL, I wish; I could use the bonus checks! :D I truly am just a random citizen who is capable of doing a modicum of research on the NH government web site.

Actually this wasn’t just because of winter this was a long time coming, there are lots and lots of articles in the local online newspapers about why this happened, you would have to go back to the beginning of last year at least maybe even farther. I don’t remember exactly what happened but it was some deal the utilities companies made more than a year ago, and they knew this was coming, and people were complaining about it. I don’t remember the details but it wasn’t supposed to be like this and they didn’t raise rates just because it was winter they raised rates because of some screwup they did a year and a half ago.

CryptoRaffi t1_j64gb05 wrote

thank you for the info, but it doesn't changes anything else I pointed out. Why the hell can they do that? Why does the government call in any tech company over monopoly issues but a company that controls the only electric poles and charges whatever the hell its wants is... emm... ok???

They even have meetings to agree on price hikes with other electric companies? If this were stocks, this would be illegal.

Oldphile t1_j65odt4 wrote

Eversource does not generate electricity. Every 6 months Eversource puts out for bids. One time I contracted with another supplier for 12 months and 6 months in Eversource had a better rate and I was stuck at the higher rate or pay a penalty to end the contract. BTW when you contract with another supplier you still pay Eversource for delivery which is currently about 1/3 of the bill. You do not have to buy electricity from Eversource, but you do have to pay them to deliver it.

CryptoRaffi t1_j66eb2c wrote

Everscource and other power companies met before the hikes and agree they all up the rates then the gov approves it for most likely nice campaign contributions or other perks who knows.
Everscource then ups the delivery rate if costumers change to the companies that charge a little less as we all know they OWN the damn lines. All of them where I live in NH.
In Europe they capped the price of electricity so THIS could not happen. Gas companies made record profits, just like in this country, but over the the gov stepped in to help the people, not approve something to financially burden them even more.

Oldphile t1_j66obvd wrote

Maybe I wasn't clear. Eversource doesn't generate electricity and they buy elsewhere. They do not make any profit on the electricity they buy. They only profit on the delivery of electricity which is only 1/3 of the bill. The increase in delivery charges was miniscule compared to the 2X charge for electricity. The significant rate increase was due to the cost of electricity. You can shop for another electricity provider and may do a little better.

And it's not the government, it's the PUC.

Remember when they wanted to bring clean, cheap hydroelectric power from Canada to New England and NH residents shut it down? Man, we sure could use that now.

Strict_Zebra_3585 t1_j66jpbj wrote

No that isn't how the grid works. Our energy, for the entire northeast, is essentially like a pool. And we draw from it what we need, where we need it. Transmission lines don't end at state or town lines.

Interesting enough.. Eversource divested from the hydroelectric dams they had. I don’t remember if they had to, as a result of the PUC.

Lords_of_Lands t1_j664z9t wrote

Keep in mind you'll need to watch your Direct Energy prices as well. After your intro period those 3rd party prices often steady increase.

3

piscatator t1_j65txco wrote

Much of NH’s power comes from natural gas power plants. The kw price increase Eversource is looking to charge customers reflects the prior six months costs to generate power. Natural gas prices increased because demand increased because Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe. Policy wise the Biden administration has signed legislation that will increase investment in renewable energy. This will help decrease the cost of electricity as the decade passes. Solar plus storage is the cheapest form of electricity by far, that does not require a dam. The other thing NH residents need to do is find out if your town or city is part of the Community Power Coalition(CPC). The CPC is going to be a nonprofit energy provider that will be cheaper than the for profit utilities and the money ratepayers pay will stay in NH and be invested in renewable energy and energy sufficiency.

Obi-Vag_Kenobi t1_j66g5aa wrote

And, if these ancient hippies don’t stop shitting on Seabrook, we may lose that source of electricity too. That’s what, 1500 megawatts? Yikes. I’ve said it before, the only problem with nuclear power nowadays is the word “nuclear “.

5

piscatator t1_j66ttzq wrote

Doubt it is going anywhere in the near future but some day the bill will come due and it won’t be pretty. They are shutting down the Pilgrim plant and may have to release contaminated water into Cape Cod bay. When something is producing waste that is deadly and lasts 10k years, one can hope that it be contained until we know what to do with it.

Thanks for leaving a productive comment.

4

CryptoRaffi t1_j66euwb wrote

Or government-owned poles would work as well and they regulate it that way. As far as I know, most poles are on public property anyways. So how is this even happening?

2

Rare_Message_7204 t1_j66kwr5 wrote

NH politics has long been in favor of single suppliers. Selling it as better than the alternative, saddling the cost of investing and adding more suppliers...Even internet which is much easier than electric to add to existing poles. We in southern NH have just started getting real alternatives to Comcast internet.

It's all politics, they're in bed with the big guys.

Democrat war on fossil fuels and energy coming home to roost. They make you blame the big evil companies to cover for their own idiotic policies. We had a chance to vote them out but everyone chose to vote to kill their babies and protect social security which no one was taking away instead.

They are responsible for the price of groceries as well, also largely due to their war on energy.

Ps the government is corrupt and gives 0 craps about our cost of living or well being. No one else on here will tell you that, so I figured I would. 👍🏼

Jesus Christ, repeat conservative talking points much? If you think this is a partisan issue, you are very much mistaken. This is bipartisan corruption at work, thanks to the glorious hold of Capitalism on our lives/the world. Widen your view a bit, maybe you'll see that the wealthy class of people manipulate our emotions and turn us against one another.

Or just keep on believing it's red vs. blue or whatever, all you're doing is hurting yourself, your family, and your neighbors by prescribing to such narrow-minded bullshit.
