Anyone else get one of these? Totally out of the blue...first we've heard of this.

"This is your final notice. if you do not pay the outstanding balance or contact the department within fourteen days to make acceptable payment arrangements, we will initiate further action to collect the debt described in this letter.

OUR RECORDS SHOW THAT YOU OWE THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT SECURITY THE SUM OF $19,481 FOR OVERPAID UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS."

Address checks out... 45 South Fruit St, Concord

Phone number checks out... 603 229 4391

Thanks a lot NHES for the interesting handling of whatever this is.

Did you collect unemployment? If so did you lie on your paperwork?

In which case go down to your local unemployment office and speak with them about it. Same thing happened to my brother and all he had to do was fill out a financial affidavit, send in his tax returns, and wait. They waived the entire amount.

That by definition means you stole from me (and from everyone else who remained solvent for the past three years and was subject to NH state taxation). The least you can do is repay it with restitution.

No it doesn't.

No idea. The guy at the office said it just happens and he sees plenty of people come in with that same letter saying the owe 20k+ and it’s almost always waived.

My son got the same “final notice.” But he never got any earlier notice and the final notice says it is too late to appeal some “determination” that was supposedly made over a year ago that he likewise never received. OP did you ever receive an earlier notice or “determination” from NHES? Incidentally my son only collected benefits for a few months back in 2020 and his claim was completely legit.

The good news is we have no state tax; the bad news is we have no functioning state agencies.

If that was true then Massachusetts would have functioning state agencies, but they don't. What they do have are overpaid bureaucrats. I honestly hope people don't think a state income tax would improve NH's state agencies because a state income tax would only create larger state agencies that don't function.

I have no idea. I wouldn't be surprised if the highest paid employee made over $250k. But why wonder about a single person when all the employees of the state of mass are making much much more than their counterparts working in NH.

NH state police make around 50k a year. Mass state police can make over 100k a year with traffic control overtime. NH Congresspersons make less than half of what Mass Congresspersons make. Every state employees income is available to the public. Look it up, check it out.

Yep happened to me too and seemed to me as very unprofessional that is comes off as extortionate. Funny thing is I filed the exact same as my coworkers, they got 3+ weeks of unemployment and I only got 1 and now they're demanding it back? It's ridiculous and I'm hoping they drop it. It's not my fault that they screwed up 2 years ago and they screwed up now.

Oof. That's a lot of unemployment.

Employees of one business use their wages as customers of other businesses. Those other businesses have to pay for their unemployment taxes via slightly higher prices, diluting the purchasing power of those employees.

One transaction at a time, everyone in the economy pays taxes, directly and indirectly.

They did the same for my SSI benefits when I was not working at all (I had to quit my job because of sexual harassment), finally had an appt to submit my paperwork for the year and they actually wiped it all out. I would definitely go down to talk to them.

Who does the government pay for all that work? Private contractors. Government is just a pointless inefficient monopolistic middleman that could just as well be cut out.
