To piggyback off this, you can use dyed diesel (off-road, farm/property use only) is the same product just cheaper because it’s not taxed

Back when I was poor, we used to have to do this in the spring after running out of heating oil and not being able to afford a full delivery. I got really good at being able to re-prime the burner.

This must be why there’s always cars that use regular gas at the diesel pump. Strange though, I never see the yellow cans.

Find somewhere with off-road diesel if you can (cheaper)

Buy a plastic 55 gallon drum. There’s a guy in Kingston who sells them for 15 bucks. Most people use them for boat docks

go to home depot or lowes and get the yellow gas cans. those mean it's diesel inside it. it just has a screw top. fill it up at the gas station, take it home, unscrew the back of the house connection and literally pour it in.

I ended up getting two so that I can fill them 10 gallons combined. Which is about how bad it can drink gas on the coldest day of the year.

There’s a guy around here (Weare/New Boston) that always posts on the Facebook group. Jimmy Jrs Oil. Don’t know much other than he’s small and he gets his oil from hooksett I believe.

I ran a bunch of diesel last year because Irving auto delivery sucks. I didn't mind too much since diesel at the pump was less expensive than what they were charging me for heating oil.

I just used gas cans. Nobody cared. Just don't forget you have diesel in them if you don't use it right away

100 gal is usually the minimum for most companies. Sometimes 75 gal is the minimum. About 8 years ago I came across this ad for a guy with a trailer with a 1000 gal tank and he way less than 100 gallons in my tank. But the second time I called him he was wishy washy about coming out and I haven’t seen an ad for a similar service since. I assume he got in trouble for what he was doing.

I have a red can with a diesel label like this on it that I use for my small diesel tractor so you see me doing this.

Definitely with the off road, but even some of the road taxed stuff is cheaper than heating oil. Golden Pond in Holderness is selling diesel for 4.99. They're typically one of the lowest prices in the state-heck 87 gas is 3.49 there when I drove by today. Good beer selection and subs too--not affiliated with them.

Former oil tech here. The sludge issue isn't really an issue, we don't pump the sludge. Just get your 100.

You are looking for “off road” diesel. It has a red dye in it and meant to be used for tractors. You avoid the tax and it will work in your oil burner.

This. Just be aware op that diesel burns hotter than traditional heating oil. So while it's fine in a pinch, you wouldn't want to do it long term.

Yes I've used diesel quite a few times, better to use the diesel grade for "off road use" vs the new clean burning diesel. I heard the clean burning (at a majority of gas stations) can damage the boiler after extended use due to burning very hot.

Am I a lucky dumbass? Is there a difference between the cans? I just have a 2 stroke can, a diesel can and a gas can. They're all the same thing I just remember which is which.

Look at your owners manual. Some boilers accept #1 & #2 fuels. Diesel no problem.
