Bear Notch road that connects Bartlett to the Kanc closes during the winter. There are a few roads that close in the winter, here’s the list. But the Kanc is always open and plowed.

I’m pretty sure the kanc is always open if you have the vehicle for it and the balls to try.

They’re accurate signs. That shit is a wild ride if you attempt it, I would highly advise against it 🤣

You’ll be okay, as long as it’s not actively snowing. It’s plowed pretty well. I used to drive across it every other day in the winter in my shitty little hyundai accent. Only ever had trouble when I got caught in a snowstorm but even then I got across fine.

Oh man it really depends on a lot of factors. I’d say if you want to aim for close to a 100% safe trip then once most of the snow is melted across the state, give it 2-3 more weeks and you’ll likely be fine. I’ve had some trips over the kanc where I didn’t follow that advice and things got a bit dicey around certain corners even at low speeds.

The Kanc should never have been paved. Scar on the land

I'll be darned - live and learn. It was completed so late that I assumed it was paved from the start.

I like dirt roads but if that baby was unpaved - it's so steep, so icy/snowy - it would cost a fortune to make it usable every spring.

LOL, and we shouldn't have complete the rural electrification program. People expect too much now!
