Hey all I'm moving out to Newport in a month and was wondering if anyone can help me out at little to try and get a feel for the town there or the area in general. Good restaurants, things to do, or cool places to drive, what are the gyms like, or anything else

Sanctuary Dairy makes amazing ice cream. They also have donkeys and goats, be nice to them. The Claremont Ramunto’s is the best of the chain and has by far the best garlic knots. Claremont Dry Goods and Spices is run by very enthusiastic knowledgeable people.

I don't care if the ice cream is terrible, I want to go here and be excellent to the donkeys. Thank you for this.

Their isn’t much to do in the area but if you like to be located in a small town with basic necessities it’s the area to live.

There's a cool Frisbee golf course if that your style. Nearby is Sunapee, remember the lake too! Claremont has some cool recreation spots and market basket. Also maybe join vc listserv for local doings and shiz. Seems like an pretty nice place if you like downtime and cozy. I think they might have a concert series or two in the summer. Also Krazy chicken at the gas station can be 👌

Pollards Mills is a beautiful waterfall you can swim in when the weather is warm. Sunapee has beautiful lake and skiing right next door. There are a lot of outdoor activities and a good gym called Newport Fitness right downtown. Not much for social/nightlife, but there are a few nice restaurants around. Suna and Refinery are close by and on the higher end. Salt Hill pub, Anchorage, Jalisco are also nice and close by.

Are you moving within state or from out of state? What brings you to Newport? I’m genuinely curious, as most Granite Staters who don’t live in the area forget Newport exists. It gets kind crummy reputation, though, like Claremont, it could be a really great place to live. I love the green in Newport.

You’re better off going to Claremont, Lebanon area, or New London for food. Salt Hill is good for getting drinks and apps, but I find their menu uninspiring and their service lackluster. Old Courthouse is decent, but not easy to find even if you know where it is. Mediocre pizza and Chinese restaurants.

Newport has a Shaw’s as their grocery store. Some people love it, but most will drive the 10-15 minutes to Market Basket or Hannaford in Claremont.

You’ll also have to go to Claremont, West Lebanon, or Keene for most of your shopping and entertainment needs. Check out Runnings in Claremont. I don’t know if you’re the clientele, but if you are, you will fall in love. Movie theaters in Claremont, Springfield VT, Keene, Lebanon, and Hanover.

Thank you for the great recommendations and also advice for the area I am from the out of state moving into state due to career opportunity in the area and just the adventure of moving somewhere different for a while Runnings is right up my alley so I'll definitely check them out when I get up there

Is there any reason specifically that Newport gets a crummy reputation?

Drugs. It’s always drugs. Drugs lead people to go dumb/crazy shit. People spend all their money on drugs and their homes start falling apart. Claremont has a similar reputation. Newport is smaller, so it gets less attention than Claremont.
