The academy awards certain kinds of films that contribute to certain kinds of movie going experiences.

Eichner’s on-screen persona doesn’t align with the kind of film the academy awards and his interactions with the press over the film’s failure definitely didn’t contribute to the kind of movie going experience the academy awards.

I haven’t seen it yet but romantic comedies are rarely up for Oscars. I don’t think any of Judd Apatow’s movies have been nominated despite him being in general appreciated by audiences and critics.

Combine that with the backlash the film got after it bombed and Eichner didn’t respond well and I wasn’t sure if you were trolling.

Early? It came out at the end of September.

It’s not getting awards talk because it doesn’t deserve it. It’s a slightly above-average romcom with the classic Judd Apatow problem of being too long and meandering. Movies like that don’t win awards. Frankly, it’s pretty basic and not a very interesting inclusion to Apatow’s repertoire.

Historically that's not true. Shakespeare in Love, Terms of Endearment, Annie Hall, The Apartment, and Marty all won Best Picture, to say nothing of acting awards for As Good As It Gets, The Goodbye Girl, Silver Linings Playbook, etc.

EDIT: Highly amused by the "those don't count" replies.

Gotcha. Yeah. When it bombed he kinda blamed straight people for not coming out in droves to watch the “first” gay romance. Which just kind of pissed off everybody. I think if he’d just been quiet, it might’ve found a wider audience on streaming. I still plan to see it. Just wasn’t in a hurry.

I wouldn't consider any of those to be in the genre of romcoms as we tend to define it personally. They have romance and comedy, but there's a fine line between Silver Linings Playbook and There's Something About Mary, and Bros is on the wrong side of that line for awards.

Not only that, he was was saying before it even came out that if it didn't do well it would be because of homophobia. He was basically getting ahead of the failure.

Is OP the same poster who, a few weeks ago, said that Bros was one of the best movies of all time?

Yeah, I like billy and he’s a really funny guy, but he did the rounds on podcast before it came out and basically said “If you don’t go see this in the theater you’re a homophobe.” I’m paraphrasing, but that was the message he was pitching. It turned me off to even seeing the movie. Plus, there’s no benefit to seeing a rom-com in the theater vs seeing it on a streaming site. I’m sure I’ll watch it when it shows up on Netflix.

You should look up all the backlash and negative press the movie got. Billy basically killed the movie by blaming straight people for not seeing it when really the gays didn't care about it either.

Fire Island and Spoiler Alert were better gay romcoms if I was to compare from that year.

I thought it was ok. A fun little rom com but I don't think its award worthy.

He always comes off like a total asshole. When I first started seeing him pop up in segments to seemingly aggravate random people on the street I couldn't believe anyone thought it was funny, but he wouldn't go away. Casting him as the lead of a movie was an awful move, and hopefully it doesn't happen again after this train wreck.

discodolphin1 t1_j5z8tkl wrote

He was such a dick. These days, rom coms are rarely released in theatres and if they are, it's George Clooney and Julia Roberts. I mean, sorry bro. But calm down.

Honestly I saw Bros alone and the other two groups in the theatre left before the halfway point, leaving me as the last one. I really wanted to like it, I thought the trailer looked adorable and I've loved other gay rom coms before. But Billy Eichner's character was such an insufferable smart-ass that I kinda hated him from the get go, and the humor didn't really hit for me honestly.

This kinda reminds me of when my little sister asked me why the 2003 remake of S.W.A.T. wasn't nominated for any awards.

I liked it too but it is super raunchy. Hard to imagine Academy and other major awards going for that.

If we’re talking about the same post, I saw it. The poster only said it was their favorite rom com of the 2020s and everyone flipped out and I think OP deleted. It was a really weird reaction honestly.

Most Hollywood Directors, Producers and Stars know better than to say anything that may distract viewers from watching their films. By Eichner's own actions and words during the press briefings he alienated more people by assuming they would automatically not watch because they were "homophobic". While that may have been true in some cases, he alienated far more with his asinine assumption publicly.

Sometimes it just happens that a movie you like very much doesn't impress very many other people. The general consensus of those who consider movies for awards and awards discussions seems to be that it didn't have a great blend of humor and romance, and didn't tell a very compelling story.

It had nothing to do with timing. It had a lot to do with being overhyped, and then hate-hyped. The director first wanted us to believe he had invented the gay romcom, and then wanted us to believe we were homophobes if we questioned his judgement. It's hard to like a mediocre film after that kind of thing.

Sorry you favorite film of 2022 wasn't considered for a nomination. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will remember to send you an email asking for your personal recommendations for best picture.

I've seen some of the scenes from the movie and I recoiled in dismay. As a gay person myself I was both put off and shocked that it is so stereotypical and so cliche and trite.

Real gay men do not act or talk or behave like this. Oh sure they do in mediocre comedies, but not in real life (at least I sure as hell hope they don't, and I wouldn't want to be around them if they did).

Of course just showing real gay men being normal would be very boring, I get that - but it is possible to show guys being into other guys without turning them into circusy one-liner-spewing caricatures. Anyone remember the fun little movie, Trick? It succeeded at doing this beautifully.

Nothing about the movie Bros strikes me as being great enough or across-all-generations conventional enough to be worthy of academy consideration.

Because it's just a vaguely decent movie? Average writing, average acting...definitely not award material.

Bros is just a generic rom com. The academy hands out awards for generic Oscar bait all the time, but I don’t think Bros was trying to bait any nominations.

Well I know it didnt do very well in theaters. I'm not saying it was a bad film. I like Billy but, I didn't see it. It just didn't find it appealing as the story wasn't relatable for me. I thought about checking it out but, I wasn't a fan of him tweeting that the people who didn't go see it were all homophobic. Thats not a polite way to treat potential audiences.

I really like the film but it didn't find that much of audience. Also comedies rarely get acknowledged by the Academy. Which oscars do you think it should have been in contention for?

i_like_2_travel t1_j60hty3 wrote

The movie managed to subvert some tropes but it still wasn’t very good. By the end neither of the leads were close to being likable.

1

i_like_2_travel t1_j60i4yt wrote

I thought it was definitely not generic but still didn’t think it was good. Mainly because of the leads like you pointed out. Dude was an asshole bad person, his parents taking him to see people fucking at 12 is not normal and shouldn’t be made out to be a good thing/way to find yourself.

That not being addressed rubbed me the wrong way,
