Jean des Florette followed by the sequel Manon de Source.

This is a brilliantly filmed, written and acted story in two parts.

And also rate the following:

Sleepers

The Foreigner

Cape Fear (both versions)

And of course, there's Mad Max (the original with Mel Gibson) which is true revenge film.

Hana-Bi is a great one: Takeshi Kitano as a former cop, vs. the Yakuza who paralysed his partner and got him kicked off the force.

I have a favorite but you don't know it's about revenge until the end, so it's a little bit of a spoiler to name it here... Has a whole cast of actors you'll recognize, main roles played by Val Kilmer and Vincent D'Onofrio if you want to look it up.

Really awesome, and I mean it in the most superb way, anime series from 2004. "Gankutsuou", based on the Dumas novel and rendered in an art style based on Western Impressionism and Japanese Ukiyo-e. Piercingly beautiful and worth every minute. (Not a film, I know, and science fiction to boot, but if only one person here follows up and is moved, then one of my soul's bucket list tasks is done.)

Buried Alive from 1990 is fun, directed by Frank Darabont.

It is not available for streaming or download anywhere as far as I can tell, but the DVD is available on Amazon.

Note that there are several movies called "Buried Alive" on Amazon Prime Video and elsewhere, including one made in 1990. They are not this movie.

The Punisher, with Thomas Jane. A mafia boss has Frank Castle's entire family murdered at a family reunion. Frank then proceeds to slowly and methodically dismantle his entire operation, trick him into killing his best friend and wife, ruin his own reputation, and wipe out every penny to his name. Only then does Frank move in to brutally kill his remaining son, his army of mercenaries, and then finally him.

Came here to say Man on Fire… Denzel does an amazing job. Not quite as good, but Vin Diesel was good in A Man Apart. And Law Abiding Citizen was amazing… the thought process of Gerard Butler’s character is awesome!

"The Limey" - Terrance Stamp stars as a recently paroled thief and generally terrible person who is called to LA to after his astranged daughter dies suddenly.

A quirky and emotional revenge tale told in that early Steven Soderberg style which shades of a classic Donald Westlake novel.

Speaking of Westlake...

"Charlie Varrick" is a massively under rated gem. My favorite Walter Mathau role as he totally plays against type as the classic Westlake protagonist...the absolute worst person in the world cross and then leave alive. Charlie is an amoral criminal mastermind out for revenge against after being left for dead and done dirty ona job by Liberace.
