The first was impressive; a relatively cheap movie with no budget for effects, elevated by a sassy and inventive script, sharp dialogue, and fantastic performances. It was like someone tossed Mean Girls into a blender with Scream and American Werewolf. The second, perhaps controversially, was my favourite. What had started as a satirical slant on periods and the troubled growth into womanhood became a more straight edged horror. This time, the werewolf was better, and Bridget made a great lead, now something of a swaggering bad ass, with Ghost giving her a great comedy foil. The settings were likewise inventive and interesting. It kept the same dark streak of humour and had some great set pieces, including the last stand at grandma’s house playing out like Red Riding Hood on crack. The third was by far the weakest, which is a shame because I love the historical era it portrays. So much of it was incongruous, and the writing and pace felt very amateur. That’s before you even consider the dumb premise that descendants of the original characters are somehow responsible for the werewolf curse. All in all, I think the first 2 films are among the better werewolf films. Having rewatched The Howling recently, I was quite disappointed, and I find American Werewolf problematic given Landis’s involvement in Twilight Zone. This leaves very little competition for the category of ‘best werewolf movie’…

I thought the first one was an interesting twist on the werewolf story. Not a big fan of the follow ups

Yeah 3 was a dumpster fire, but 2 I found really enjoyable. It couldn’t just trade in on the whole period/werewolf comparison any longer, so delving into mental health and drug abuse wasn’t a bad choice. But I can see why people prefer the first.

The sequel was way better than it got credit for, imho, and Bridget really comes into her own as a fascinating character both distinct from and similar to Ginger.

Tatiana Maslany was already great then, and it's fun to follow the many threads from these movies to Orphan Black.

Agree about Ginger Snaps Back. It's just okay, but never quite seems to spark.

Totally agreed, although I didn’t even think 3 was anything near ‘fine’ haha
