This was the first and only film that Coppola made with his own studio that aimed at giving decent schedules and conditions to cast and crew. They gambled it all on this one movie to succeed and show the industry great movies could be made in a more humane way. And it did get some good critiques but in the end it cost so much and made back so little Coppola was paying his debt for the next 10 years or so.

The thing is, the movie never got a proper theatrical release. It was given a week of limited distribution to see how it would do and then it got shelved. So it never stood a chance.

I like this movie. Coppola's 80s films are generally underrated. They aren't as good as his 70s output (what is?), but most of them are very worthwhile. Messy, definitely, but they've got style for days.

Yeah, agreed. I think they're judged a lot more harshly when compared to his '70s work (I mean, we're talking about some of the greatest American films ever made, so that there's a pretty high benchmark), but if any other director had Peggy Sue Got Married, Rumble Fish, The Outsiders, Gardens of Stone, Tucker: The Man and His Dream and, yes, even visual marvels/noble failures like The Cotton Club and One From The Heart under their belt over the course of a decade, most would agree that's not too shabby.

Soundtrack and Score by Tom Waits (w/ Crystal Gayle) that's all I needed to make it worth watching.

I listened to it this morning on the way to work. Such an incredible album. I can't tell you more than maybe one or two things about the movie, but goddamn is my love for the soundtrack deep and wide.

It saddens me how this movie could have changed the way that movie studios were structured if it had succeeded and legitimized Coppola's experiment, but it failed.

My favorite bit of oddball trivia about this film is that all the neon in it - and if you've seen it, you know that's a lot of neon - wound up getting repurposed for Blade Runner. It's kinda funny to think that something of this mad, grand folly is running through BR's veins.

Coppola has made some of my favorite movies of all this time and I wanted to like this movie so much but it it truly, deeply dreadful

I kind of understand why he made the choices he did given the spirit of the times and going against traditional craftsmanship and just kind of 'winging it'

You can find some really nice moments from it, some good songs, some good scenes, some nice 'stills' - but as a whole it is a complete disaster.

I hope he pulls it together for the new film he's making now.
