TL/DR: Hero knocks out bad guy, leaves weapons and runs away empty handed.

One of the most frustrating tropes in movies or even TV is the escape, where an unarmed protagonist is escaping captivity and knocks out a heavily armed enemy only to run away without taking any of their weapons.

This is all too common in my opinion

Depends on the "hero".

Hard as a coffin nail, ex-Three Letter Acronym commando ninja? Agree, they shouldn't be leaving a weapon they can use. And if they can't carry it, they'd put it out of useful condition.

Flustered suburban parent thrust into a situation out of their control? Disagree, they're more likely to harm themselves with a terrorist's assault rifle.

At least the opposite occurs in movies like Black Hawk Down where the operators were shown taking the magazines from dropped weapons - they knew the next man along would just pick it up and point it at them.

>Black Hawk Down

Almost the exception to the rule. John Wick being another exception, he's always using whats around him and it makes him stand out

When I read "Hero leaves the weapon behind", I thought you were going to reference Deadpool leaving the bag of guns in the taxi. In that case, it was because the final showdown in the script was supposed to be a much bigger event, but the studio cut the budget by a huge chunk, so that final showdown had to be cut down significantly. Deadpool leaving all the guns behind was a nod to that change in the script.

Instead of an annoying trope, it's a pretty funny moment.

Rambo and others did that a lot in the 80s so that the hero had to use stealth and hand to hand combat. This is why it was so great to see Die Hard where there hero picked up their weapons. “Now I have a machine gun!”

It always irritates me in a horror movie when the character in a horror movie knocks the badguy down and just throws the weapon beside them.

Or the hero who has a gun/weapon and the Main bad guy is unarmed or out of ammo, so the main good guy just sets his weapon down so feet can punch each other for a while.

Wtf?! Just shoot him and be done with it, or arrest him when applicable.
