So i came across this movie due to its theme song (https://youtu.be/a2GujJZfXpg) so i decided to watch the movie, as the story unfolded with the stunning visuals, i realised that i missed out on this gem & many others for soo many years. I thought of sharing this with you guys who haven't watched it yet. The story was quite interesting and heartbreaking at the same time. Even when i think about it, i am overwhelmed knowing what an impact it has made on me.

I'll suggest you to watch this movie when you want to reward yourself after a long week or when you feel like you have lost hope. There's more depth to this than we can imagine.

I stumbled upon it at Anime Boston a few years ago and ended up watching the whole thing instead of just taking a few minutes to rest my feet. Sweet movie.

It's my favorite anime movie as well and probably in my top 5 favorite movies of all time.💚

I loved Your Name when it first came out. Can't believe it came out 6 years ago already! It's definitely my favorite from the director as well (Makoto Shinkai). None of his other movies have really touched me quite like Your Name.

If you want another great anime film, you should check out the amazing psychological thriller/horror Perfect Blue. It's my favorite anime film of all time (tied with The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya), and its director Satoshi Kon has a much more consistent and interesting catalogue as opposed to Makoto Shinkai.

If you're in the mood for some more anime movies I'd also very highly recommend the movie A Silent Voice - it's darker in tone than Your Name (different writer/director too) and deals with disability, bullying, abuse and suicide. It's not all doom and gloom though, it's often uplifting too.

If you're in the US it's available on Netflix and various other services in other countries:

Another highly regarded movie by the same writer/director as Your Name is The Garden of Words.

Also check out movies by Hayao Miyazaki such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and others - in most countries they are available on Netflix but in the US are to be found on HBO Max instead.

I could recommend many more from different writers and directors ......

I'm gonna be *that* person and provide a fun (?) fact that it is widely regarded by many films + anime lovers that Nolan took a lot of "inspirations" from Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue and Paprika for his films (most notably Inception).

No hate for Nolan, no slander intended. Just want to add 1 more notch to how actually influential Japanese filmmaking/animation really is to Hollywood.

It’s a great movie but I can never shake the issue I have with the plot revolving around a nearby town getting wiped out by a comet and no one remembering it.

This movie was a huge sensation here in Japan and was in the theatre for a really long time. Makoto Shinkai (director) was already a big deal here, but this movie did amazingly well. It’s a great movie, and I also recommend anyone to watch it. Check out the other movies by Shinkai, as well.

My fave anime movie (and top 3 all time)! You should also check out his other big movie, Weathering With You. It's beautifully animated with a motivating story. Makoto Shinkai also just came out with a new movie, Suzume no Tojimari, so keep a look out for its US release!

I don't like the sudden high stakes. I enjoyed the first half more but it's still a good movie. I guess that's why I'm partial to 5cm Per Second. Weathering with You was decent too.

It's decent. I prefer The End of Evangelion if we're talking about anime movies, but that obviously relies on you having seen the series. I don't even think Your Name cracks my top 10 anime movies, but I'm not a huge fan of the medium.

A sadistic voice in me wants to see Abrams version of this masterpiece. It's like the Avatar movie, that in the end just makes me laugh every time I see it.

I could talk hours of the things I love about this movie, but one of the biggest thing is the 60 Wallpapers a Second the movie runs on. I had a time where I would change my desktop every month with a random still of the movie and I loved everyone of them.

Mine too, awesome anime. Check out weathering with you by the same director.

The plot has a lot of that "don't think about it too much" energy. Like why do they forget some things and not others, when do they forget things, how does phone information get erased, etc etc. Of course part of the answer is "it's literally magic, you don't have to understand it," and all things considered it doesn't really matter, but it still raises questions when you really start thinking about it.

I saw Steamboy cold in the theaters. I think I saw Sin City, Millions, and Steamboy in the span of like 2 weeks. Saw both Millions and Steamboy stone cold not having seen a commercial or synopsis of them. Just a tremendous experience. Nothing beats seeing something great without the burden of any preconceptions with people you love. Those moments are frozen in forever.

I liked it until I saw his other movies like Weathering With You and his older work like Voices of a Distant Star/5 Cm per Second, and then I realized that he's just been making the same movie over and over for decades

Okay, I'll take the more interesting comment as a debatable opinion, but more consistent?

If I have a criticism about Shinkai, it's that he always makes the same movie. A boy and a girl have something that makes communication between them difficult. They struggle with this but mostly they are sad. They accept that struggle is part of growing up.

That's...every movie he's done. And the visuals are always beautiful, top-notch, and probably feature clouds. There's a very good chance something from space is involved.

He's like the most consistent director I could imagine.

I highly recommend all his movies and am anxiously awaiting his new one which hopefully reaches the us in January... honestly he is a fantastic director and has a pretty broad body of work. I really wish that the live action jj Abrams movie would go away. I see no way in which that ends up working well.

Dude, you know what I mean. It’s just not my favorite. I really only like older, very psychological anime like Eva, Serial Experiments Lain, GiTS, etc. I don’t like the way new anime looks, so CG heavy.

There's a lot of mention of some other recent related films, but only one person mentioned Shinkai's first movie, Voices of a Distant Star. It has many of the same themes (because all his movies do).

What's amazing about it is that he did pretty much the whole thing himself. The writing, the art--even the acting originally, but he did get professionals to redo it for the public release. Despite being pretty much a one-man project, it was still one of the most beautiful films when it came out (and still holds up). It's just incredible to think of how much he personally did for that movie. It's only like 30 minutes long, but still. After seeing that, I was certain Shinkai would be untouchable as an anime director, and I think that holds up. He's delivered the same quality consistently.

Another good anime movie that I haven't seen mentioned is "I Want to Eat your Pancreas."

The title is.. absurd, but the movie is really good. And probably not at all what you think of when you hear the title.

1

blitzbom t1_iyew1u3 wrote

People did remember it, only Taki forgot the bulk of what was going on due to magic fuckery. His friends knew exactly what happened when they heard the name.

Zoradesu t1_iyexc6p wrote

I guess what I mean by consistent in this context is his writing, at least in my opinion. A lot of his films do feature pretty similar writing beats, but some his stories feel like they take a backseat for the sake of the visuals. You get a lot of "wallpaper" moments, but they often don't really mean anything other than looking pretty. Your Name feels like his best project to me because it has the best balance of breathtaking visuals and an engaging enough story. Something like Weathering For You or Children Who Chase Lost Voices was disappointing for me because the stories were underwhelming or they didn't really go anywhere.

4

arcosapphire t1_iyeznkx wrote

What's surprising about Your Name is that the plot did actually go somewhere. Otherwise, his movies are pretty much entirely character studies. You hear a lot about what the characters are thinking. Mostly their doubts.

So again, extremely consistent. Like what actually happens in Voices? Some people essentially talk to themselves. What happens in Beyond the Clouds? Same thing. What happens in 5cm? Same thing. What happens in Your Name? Same thing except this time they also save a town. See, that's the aberration. But it was just in addition to the things that are always there. And it nearly ended like the other Shinkai films, where the two characters drift apart, but swerved at the last second.

I'm fine with movies that aren't plot-driven, so I still love what Shinkai makes. But back to the point, even if you don't like that sort of thing, I can't see how you could call him anything but consistent.

3

Zoradesu t1_iyf1pvw wrote

For me it's just how he writes some of his characters. In Voices, the characters were just bland to me and I couldn't really connect with them. I feel the same way about Garden of Words. But then you have Your Name and 5cm to where you could emotionally connect with those characters. That and the actually stories for some of his films is where the inconsistencies were for me. Like I said, I agree his films do have similar beats, but the quality of the writing is inconsistent from movie to movie for me.

Darth_Rutsula t1_iyf7ww1 wrote

I have a strong dislike for the movie because the characters are dumb and don't pay attention to anything around them. Particularly on the mountain top. That whole scene just drove me crazy.

Cool visuals though.

I also thought Weathering With You looked pretty bad. Especially the fireworks scene.

Very few projects have figured out how to CGI well in anime styles (Promare, Chainsaw Man), but Weathering With You is definitely not one of them.
