Last night, Toronto had the honour to start off the Whiplash in Concert tour with Justin Hurwitz. Seeing the movie all over again and having a live band perform all the music was exhilarating. The first time I saw this movie was in an empty theatre back in 2014 and it was exciting to watch my all-time favourite movie along with other fans years later.

The performances were mind-blowingly good, especially the drummer! What a talent. The ending was sensational and my jaw dropped when the drum solo came on. Witnessing the drummer kill it during the solo… I had chills! It was truly something.

When the credits rolled, we cheered and applauded everyone and we stood for the rest of the credits as they performed.

I would highly recommend seeing this performance when you get the chance!

Did they chuck a chair into the crowd to get everybody in the mood?

So this was a limited (very limited) engagement that was in Boston on Friday the 28th and Toronto on the 30th.

The show in Boston was supposed to feature Berklee School of Music 17 piece Rainbow Big Band.

Boston got cancelled on the 24th with no make up date and no information why.

Glad you had a good time though, I was looking forward to this all summer

I’m so sorry to hear that! From what Justin Hurwitz said last night, he was thrilled to kick off the tour in Toronto and we were the first to witness Whiplash in Concert. It kinda sounded that they have something in store for the future. So maybe there will be more shows to be announced soon? I hope the Boston show will be rescheduled!

I had a chance a few years ago to see La La Land in concert featuring the Milwaukee Symphony, one of Justin Hurwitz’s hometown orchestras, and the pianist who performed on the soundtrack, but I didn’t go because I hadn’t yet seen the movie. Probably was a great concert.

He was neither rushing nor dragging?

I would love Justin Hurwitz to do a tour where he plays songs from each of the movies he’s composed. First Man, La La Land and Whiplash all have beautiful scores.

I was hoping they would expand the schedule to somewhere in the NY-Philadelphia, hell I’d even trek down to DC area. Almost considered getting a hotel in Boston to go see this but it just didn’t make sense at the time.
