Hi r/movies,

I'm very interested in everything about how movies are made. I recently found the Hobbit movie production diaries and loved them. Are there any other films out there that have made similar detailed dives into all the nitty gritty stuff?

If you don't know, the Hobbit diaries start a few days before shooting begins and go well into post, covering all kinds of (mostly actor-relevant) facets of the process. If I recall correctly they came out live during production as well so fans could follow along up to the release.

If you're able to refer any other resources like blogs or articles you think we might find interesting please do!

Thanks!

Edit: thanks to everyone who responded! This will keep my busy for a long time!

The Island of Doctor Moreau and Lost Soul. Also there’s some good bts content in the movie Val.

El Mariachi and the book Rebel Without a Crew

Peter Jackson did production diaries for King Kong, and the making of releases with the Extended Lord Of The Rings release are really good. If I remember right the frighteners had a good one.

It’s not quite the same thing, but one of the bonus features on Gladiator is a ton of journal entries by the kid who was in it.

It’s fascinating just because, as a kid, he was so blown away by Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe, and Joaquin Phoenix.

It’s a really neat look at some of the “day-in-the-life” stuff on a film shot on location. Stuff like big cast parties and people who visited the production for some reason or another.

Never seen anything quite like it before.

Completely different tack, but you might enjoy The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. The guy who did the Super Size Me documentary details endorsements and product placement as he goes out and tries to find backers for the documentary about getting backers.

Wreckage and Rage for Alien 3. All the Alien films in fact have similar docs but 3 has the spiciest story for sure. There are millions of making of docs about them.

Future Noir is a book about the making of Bladerunner

My absolute favorite though is the book The Man Who Heard Voices about the making of M. Night Shamalayan's Lady in The Water... which is actually a movie I can't stand but the book gets into the real on set drama in a way I have not seen anywhere else.

There is also the book The Devil's Candy about the making of The Bonfire of the Vanities

Harry Potter has loads of production stuff and good companion book I think called film wizardry, really detailed artwork. Depends if you’re into that world
