In the first scene in Cole's living room with Dr. Crowe, he reveals that Cole's mother went to see a doctor after her divorce, and that she told the doctor things, secrets that she wasn't supposed to tell, and that Cole has secrets that he doesn't want to tell. I assumed this was to convey to the audience that Cole told his mother his secret, and she broke his trust.

I thought that this, before seeing the ending, is the reason for Cole's distrust in doctors/therapists. It came as a shock and confused me most of the film that Cole's mother treated him with little patience while knowing his issues, but I understood why she wouldn't tell his secret to Crowe until Cole was ready.

I am confused about what the secrets were that she told her doctor, and why they were relevant to/upset Cole enough for Crowe to bring it up. Cole seemed to be quite affected by it. Can anyone provide some insight? Thank you in advance.

I haven’t seen the movie in a minute, but I don’t think she knew for sure what Cole was, only that there was something going on he wasn’t telling her. He tells her in the scene in the car iirc.

Cole probably didn’t trust doctors because they would tell him or his mom something was wrong with him while not knowing the real reason.

Been a while since I've seen it but I assume the doctor was a psychologist and the secrets had to do with her divorce and ex partner.

I don't think she even met with Crowe before his death. He probably knew some details through social workers. I think she might have had some clue but not exactly what Cole was going through. She had her own issues that she might have revealed. Cole's resistance probably comes from a lot of overworked social workers general observations, but not really listening or understanding.

I saw it in the theater when it came out. I was so shocked by the ending I turned around and watched again immediately after.
