Casey Affleck had always been known as a supporting actor till then. Even in (imo) his best performance before this film, in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, he was still nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, even though he was arguably the protagonist of that film.
But Manchester by the Sea had him front and center with nowhere to hide, and he proved himself as an incredible talent on his own merits.
