In my opinion, you can only consider yourself a certified fan of a filmmaker based on two things: whether you like their work, and how many of their films you have watched. Saying you're a fan of a filmmaker while only watching one of their films is superficial in my opinion. That's why Quentin Tarantino, Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan, and Edgar Wright are my favorite filmmakers since I really like their movies and I've watched most of them (have to finish watching them all, though)

With that in mind, there are some exceptions to be made based on the staggering number of films. If it's too much, you should watch up to ten films made by the filmmaker. I want to start watching Akira Kurosawa, but the man has made over 34 films. Most of them are iconic, but I really want to narrow down which ten films of his should I watch to qualify as a fan.

Edit: okay fine, I concede. You can still be a fan of a filmmaker if you've only seen one film, but I still think you should try to watch their other movies.

No need to gatekeep.

Man, I wish I was watching all of these for the first time again. The only other time I’ve experienced anything like the same rush of discovery was when I watched all the Sergio Leone movies in college. Enjoy!

I’m not “certified”. Does this mean you are going to take away my driver’s license or something?

Here’s how I’d start:

  • Yojimbo
  • Sanjuro
  • 7 Samurai
  • Hidden Fortress
  • Throne of Blood
  • Rashomon

Then mix it up afterwards

I would think that whoever is handing out certifications would also know the requirements.

For proper certification please pay the necessary annual certification fees. I will get in touch with you for my bank data so you can be processed and we can send you a fan certificate "Akira Kurosawa, 2023". Please note certificates expire annually and must be renewed.

Don't claim to be a fan without proper certification to prove validity!

Your friendly fan certification service.

edit: Just realized, please provide proof you watched 24 of his movies and 4 repeat viewings each following year.

Since we're gatekeeping here, anyone who immediately names Snyder, Wright, Nolan, and Tarantino as their lineup of favorite directors isn't certified to have an opinion on anything related to movies.

Erghh erggh gatekeeping I heard a nonsense word that the internet made up and now I’m using it instead of engaging in actual discourse.
