Hey there! I'm a huge fan of historical movies and TV shows, and I'm always on the lookout for new recommendations. I recently watched "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," "The Highwaymen," "Peaky Blinders," and "The Devil All the Time," and I loved all of them.

They were so immersive and fascinating, and I really enjoyed being transported to a different time and place. Now that I've finished those shows, I'm looking for something new to watch. I'm interested in anything that's set in a historical period or event, especially if it has a unique or unconventional perspective.

I'd love to find something that's similar in tone to the shows I've already seen, with rich characters, great dialogue, and a strong sense of time and place. If you have any recommendations for me, I'd be really grateful! I'm open to all kinds of movies and TV shows, from different time periods and genres. I'm particularly interested in stories that explore themes like power, justice, morality, and survival, and that shed light on different aspects of history that I might not know much about.

Some other historical movies and TV shows that I've enjoyed in the past include "Saving Private Ryan," "Peaky Blinders," "Narcos," "The Power of the dog," "The revenant," "Vikings," and "Forrest Gump." I'm also a big fan of Westerns, anything set in 1860 to 1950, medivel type and crime dramas, so anything in those genres would be great too. Thanks so much for your help! I can't wait to discover some new favorites and delve deeper into the fascinating world of historical movies and TV shows.

I had to read your list twice to make sure Master and Commander wasn’t mentioned anywhere.

Road to Perdition would probably scratch that itch.

As would The Untouchables.

Based on the movies you mentioned, I'd recommend the True History of the Kelly Gang which is very loosely based on the Australian outlaw Ned Kelly.

Neither the book nor the movie is historically accurate at all.

Both the book and movie are so misleading, so offensive, and so counterproductive to Holocaust education, the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum actively discourages people from reading or watching them.

American Gangster 2007 movie.

There is also a newer prequel TV series to this movie called "Godfather of Harlem" but I haven't seen it yet.

To put a bit of a caveat on this one, there's definitely a bit of whitewashing. I think one of the white dude upper brass types in the movie is shown going to bat a fair bit for the women against his colleagues but iirc, that definitely didn't happen irl and it seems like they really had to wrangle with ugly office politics more than was shown in order to get taken seriously.

Like, it's a cool movie about a chapter in the history of space flight that definitely doesn't get as much attention as it should, but I saw it and looked it up the historical details afterwards and it definitely made me question some of the choices the script writer and director went for to make it more palatable, I guess, to general audiences?

It is probably the most accurate movie depiction of life on a sailing warship. It is also a great, great movie. And if you'd like more there are 20 books in the Aubrey/Maturin Series, which are widely regarded as the best historical fiction. I think the NYTimes calls it the best series ever.

The Right Stuff, Quiz Show, Eight Men Out, Tombstone are some I can think of.

American Graffiti is a great portal into the early 60's. The Rocketeer for the 30's

Any war movie really.
