American Beauty is the name of a rose. It's also probably sexual.
I haven’t seen the movie in 20 years, but I really don’t think it was giving a message about pollution and consumerism.

Are you asking this question or showing how smart you are?
You asked a question about a rose and then posted a long discussion of the plastic bag. I’m confused. Which one do you want to talk about?
White men aren't allowed to feel angst now? White men aren't allowed to chafe against the monotony and emptiness of modern life?
You're one of those gatekeepers I hear about, aren't you? Because white guys have it sooooo easy.

How do you title your post with that question and then spend four paragraphs not even talking about it?

There are roses throughout the movie. Remember the scene when Scott Bakula compliments the roses in Annete Bening's garden. The roses represent hollow external beauty, materialism and status. Which is exactly what the middle class suburban characters are obsessed with.
racism and sexism still isn't cool dude.
