I've seen a lot of these period piece Victorian era romance films...and this is probably the most cinematic of them all.

This movie just oozed style and it honestly caught me off guard. From the incredible cinematography, down to the editing, this feels bold & slick.

That Mask scene is one I'll never forget.

Totally agree, I was expecting another straight forward period piece since I went in blind about anything more than the basic premise, but this movie was smart, funny, stylish, and somewhat flippant with the genres tropes.

The score added to the storytelling tremendously and the cinematography was creative for this genre. Emma Mackey was fantastic, a real highlight in recent performances.

On a funny note, the audience was 100% over sixty besides me (30’s) and I don’t think any of them enjoyed this film as much as I did. An older couple even left after the mast scene lol

Heard many good things about this film from TIFF. It was interesting.

It's a standard typical character study portray about writer Emily Brontë with gorgeous camerawork, costumes and a strong lead performance from Emma Mackey. Bronte who wrote Wuthering Heights has an interesting background and the film does a decent job exploring her personality and background. The camerawork is beautiful, the uses of soundtrack was good, and the colors although certain moments felt too dark; felt purposeful to it's setting. Mackey's performance as the lead character was great alongside with Fionn Whitehead and Alexandra Dowling as Whitehead and Dowling had great moments together. The other performances from the cast were alright but felt kind of underacted at times.

The narrative is pretty standard and the standard structure does make certain moments feel too slow as it made the movie a bit boring. The direction from Frances O'Connor is decent although a bit uneven. The characters of Emily and her brother Branwell were the most interesting parts as anytime the two are on screen, there is great chemistry and atmosphere together. While the other characters were unfortunately were kind of dull and not as interesting.

Overall, the film still holds strong with a strong lead performance, camerawork and pretty good written dialogue that was interesting to listen. The mask scene was brilliantly executed.

This is such a great film for a debut from Frances O’Connor and although I found out afterward that it wasn’t “accurate”, it doesn’t change my perception of the film. I thought it was fantastic and one of those movies where I just have to sit in silence for a while to take it all in afterwards

This movie just didn't hit me the right way. I didn't like any of the characters, didn't appreciate any of the tension or tragedy that they experienced. It was very beautiful and had a few amazing scenes, but the actual emotion of a lot of those scenes felt flat to me and it made the score seem heavy handed, like it was saying "look at how amazing this movie is!"

The mask scene for example was really fun and entertaining but I don't understand the significance or what actually happened. She managed to scare everyone into thinking she was possessed (after they were shit talking her). Then the door burst open and the wind was blowing around the room, so I would have been into it if they leaned into the supernatural angle. But it turns out she really was just pretending? Why did the door fling open then?

I went in fairly blind besides reading the plot synopsis, not really sure why it's hitting me different than most other reviewers. Am I looking at the movie "wrong," or do other people agree? Not trying to shit on the movie, it was very well made, but maybe you can explain some of the things I didn't like

It's probably telling that my first reaction to this was "what movie is this?". I don't even recall seeing it being advertised in Australia.

Yeah, it's weird. Here in America, I saw one trailer before a movie a few months ago, and I go to the movies every week, and it's only playing in one or two theatres in a pretty decent sized metro area. It's pretty good though. Definitely worth seeing.
