For my current assignment in school I have to do an oral presentation on a movie. We are ultimately exploring conventions, themes, and how things such as music or shot types convey these conventions and themes to us.

I also want to be interested in the movie, I like comedy, action, drama.

The movie needs to have a deeper meaning, with conventions that relate to that meaning. In class we’ve already annotated films such as Gattica and how it represents genetic inferiority and trying to fit into the norm.

I’d want the movie to be on Netflix. I originally was going to do Breaking Bad but we are not allowed tv shows :(

For deeper meaning ‘one flew over cuckoo’s nest’ was recently added to Netflix. There’s a lot there to unpack from nurse ‘Ratched’ psychopathic personality and ability to subtly instigate and demean the patients, the viewers tendency to idolise and see them selves in mcmurphy and his attempts to save the minds of fellow patients and in his plight sacrifice himself and die for his friends in a Christ like manner, the patients who suffer from intimacy and trust with women, the doctors who over look the suffering of patients and rely on brutal technics like electro therapy that endure more suffering and lobotomies that mutilate patients. There’s alot to unpack, there’s a book to read, and there’s many you tube video essays that will help you understand the movie and it themes.

Nightcrawler would be an interesting one if you wanted to talk about a film that breaks conventions, especially with regards to music.

Here’s an article about James Newton Howard’s score and why it went against his instincts and traditional movie conventions. There’s a few interesting threads on Reddit from when it was first released, with people commenting how jarring they found the score and that it made them uncomfortable, which of course was partly the point.

Cloud Atlas. For a lot of obvious reasons. A lot of meaning a lot of innovative ways of expressing that meaning.

There's no better example of music supporting the meaning, themes, etc than star wars. George Lucas called it the oxygen of the films, shot and acted in such a way that you can understand the film with no dialogue because of the music

Ben Hur

Blade Runner 2049 is a fantastic choice. I 100% know you could at least the themes through shot types in a ton of different spots.

No Country for Old Men is also an interesting choice
