You can have salsa for breakfast, but you’re dead if you have it for lunch on March 18.

Oh my god, what time is it? 11 am! I have only minutes to eat all my salsa!

This is an alternative way to list the batch number.

Eg: Exactly 6 months before the expiry, this was made.

This is done so that they can issue a recall of a specified range of expiry times if they find out something went wrong with that batch, like “all salsa with expiry date Mar 18, 2023 between 1:01pm and 3:12pm is contaminated with enriched plutonium”.

Makes sense, but it’s strange they would include it as the use by date, instead of putting it somewhere else, or different phrasing

Probably cheaper to stamp a single thing, rather than have a second stamp somewhere. They are probably doing the bare minimum to comply with some regulation.

“Beware the ides of March” became a whole lot more serious when fresh salsa was on the line.
